広い境内を有する神社や寺院では左右対称の建造物が多い。「シンメトリー」を意識することで安定した調和感やはっきりとした規則性が感じられ、なぜか安心感を覚える。西洋でも東洋でも左右対称の幾何学性のあるものに古くから価値が見いだされてきた。美しさの基本は調和、安定、合理性はどこにおいても同じである。一方、自然の中には対称形のものなく、その非対称の美しさも日本では受け入れてきた。
 
Many shrines and temples with large precincts are symmetrical. By being conscious of "symmetry", you can feel a stable sense of harmony and clear regularity, and for some reason you feel a sense of security. From ancient times, value has been found in things with symmetrical geometry in both the West and the East. The basis of beauty is harmony, stability and rationality. On the other hand, there is no symmetrical shape in nature, and the asymmetrical beauty has been accepted in Japan.

 
左右対称の代表的な建造物のひとつである「平安神宮」はご承知の通り、平安京大内裏(だいだいり)の正庁を模して造られた朱塗りの日本を代表する應天門や大極殿の美しさが際立つ。應天門くぐり砂利がひかれた広い空間の正面には大極殿が見える。その景色は朱に彩られている別世界のようだ。建造物自体もそうであるが建物配列すべてがシンメトリーである。大極殿を中央に、左に白虎楼、右に蒼龍楼があり、そして應天門に近い左には額殿、右に神楽殿がある。
 
As you know, "Heian Jingu", which is one of the representative buildings that are symmetrical, is the Otenmon that represents Japan and is painted in red, which was built to imitate the main office of Heiankyo Daigokuden (Daidairi). The beauty of Daigokuden stands out. Daigokuden can be seen in front of the large space where gravel is drawn through Otenmon. The scenery is like another world colored in vermilion. As with the building itself, the entire building array is symmetric. With Daigokuden in the center, the Byakko Tower is on the left, the Souryu Tower is on the right, and the Forehead Hall is on the left and the Kagura Hall is on the right near Otenmon.

 
砂利がひかれた広い空間の中央に立って回転して見ると、幾何学的で規則正しい景色は地球から見える “朱の宇宙” のよう。この空間も、またさらに奥の空間にも我われの目に見えない何かが存在しているかもしれない。そんなことを想い巡らして眺めるのも実に楽しいものである。
 
When you stand in the center of a large space with gravel and rotate it, the geometric and regular scenery looks like the "red universe" seen from the earth. There may be something invisible to us in this space as well as in the inner space. It’s really fun to think about such things and look at them.
