子どものころサツマイモとレンコンの天ぷらがよく食卓にのっていた。そのせいか、いまでもレンコンは大好物の一つになっている。

When I was a child, sweet potatoes and lotus root tempura were often on the table. Because of that, lotus roots are still one of my favorites.

この写真は、前回紹介した美しい蓮の花を咲かせていた蓮畑の3か月後である。一面レンコン畑に変貌していた。初夏には荘厳な景色を楽しめたが、このあり様に。 

This photo is three months after the lotus field where the beautiful lotus flower was introduced last time. It was transformed into a lotus root field. I enjoyed the magnificent scenery in the early summer, but this is how it is.

レンコンは葉や葉茎が枯れると酸素供給が止まりそれ以上成長しない。
それ以後は収穫したいときにしたい分だけ収穫できる、というのが特徴らしい。 収穫はすべてが人力で、池に入って油圧ショベルで底の土を掘り起こしながら足や手で見つけ出す。また、よく見かけるのが、太いホースから水を噴射しながら土を掘り起こしていく方法である。

When lotus root and leaf stem die, the lotus root stops supplying oxygen and does not grow anymore.
 After that, it seems that you can harvest as much as you want when you want. Harvesting is all done manually, and you find it with your feet or hands while entering the pond and excavating the bottom soil with a hydraulic excavator. Another common method is to dig up the soil while spraying water from a thick hose.

レンコン農家はハウス栽培が主流になりつつあるが、このように野外のレンコン畑は収穫には過酷な作業が強いられる。この畑も、ボチボチ収穫時期のようだ。久々にレンコンが食べたくなった。 そして収穫が終われば、再び根つきレンコンを植えていく。この循環の途中に、前回紹介の美しい花を咲かせるのである。

House lot cultivation is becoming the mainstream for lotus root farmers, but in this way lots of lotus root fields are subjected to harsh harvesting work. This field also seems to be the time to harvest. I wanted to eat lotus root after a long time. When the harvest is over, we will plant rooted lotus root again. In the middle of this cycle, the beautiful flowers introduced in the previous article bloom.
