昨日、仏画曼荼羅アート教室の皆さんに仏像彫刻のことについて話す機会があった。
かれこれ7、8年前になるだろうか、滋賀県の近江舞子にある勢山社という仏師(仏像彫刻士)の工房に出掛けたときのことを思い出しながら話した。

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to talk to everyone in the Buddhist Mandala Art Class about Buddhist sculpture.
It was about seven or eight years ago, and I remembered when I went to the workshop of a Buddhist master (Buddha sculptor) named Seizan-sha in Maiko Omi, Shiga Prefecture.

勢山社は、大阪からJR湖西線経由でちょうど一時間の距離にある琵琶湖畔の近江舞子駅から車で5、6分のところにある。別荘地帯の一角に佛像造顕所「勢山社」という工場のような工房がある。その大きさはビルの3、4階くらいの高さの工房で少々びっくりした。その高さが必要な訳はまたご紹介する。
その勢山社の代表であり大仏師の渡邊勢山師を訪ねた。お弟子さんたちを入れ7、8名の大所帯の工房である。大佛師というのは、解かりやすく言うなら佛像の彫師の中で最高峰の称号をもつ佛師のこと言う。

Seizan-sha is a 5- or 6-minute driving from Omi Maiko Station on the shore of Lake Biwa, which is just one hour away from Osaka via the JR Kosei Line. At the corner of the villa area, there is a factory like a factory called "Seizan-sha". I was a little surprised at the size of the workshop, which was about the third and fourth floors of the building. I will introduce the reason why the height is needed again.
I visited Seizan Watanabe, who is a representative of the Seizan-sha and is a great Buddhist master. It is a large-scale workshop with 7 or 8 disciples. The Great Buddhist is the Buddhist master with the highest title among the Buddhist sculptors.

事前に連絡していたので、勢山師は私を快く迎えていただいた。お会いするのは2回目であるが電話でお話していたので少し気は楽だった。
早速、工房の一階の広いところには製材されている木が山済みにされている、工務店の材料置き場のようなところに案内され木の説明を受けた(前回紹介)。すべて木曽の檜ということである。木曽の檜が植えられている中でも、仏像の木として使える檜はごく一部で決まったところに植えられているという。

I contacted him in advance, so Mr.Seizan welcomed me. It was my second time to meet, but it was a little easier because I was talking on the phone.
Immediately, I was guided to a place like a material store of a construction shop where the wood that has been sawn has been piled up in a large area on the first floor of the workshop (previous introduction). It is all about Kiso cypress. Even though Kiso cypresses are planted, only a small part of them can be used as Buddhist image trees.

その檜を切り出すのはほぼ樹齢500年以上のものばかり。切ったものを山で寝かし空気にさらす。そして海へ。海につけておく時間が5年ぐらいという。水につけるのは木に詰まっている二酸化炭素や不純物をとり乾燥させるという目的で長い期間水中で熟成させる。
熟成させた檜を製材したものが所狭しと積み上げられている。勢山社に来てからもさらに寝かしている。

Most of the cypresses are cut out over 500 years old. Let the cut pieces rest in the mountains and expose them to the air. And to the sea. It is said that it will be left in the sea for about 5 years. To soak in water, it is aged for a long time in water for the purpose of removing carbon dioxide and impurities from the tree and drying it.
Aged cypress sawn timber is piled up narrowly. cypress sawn timber has been sleeping even more since cypress sawn timber came to Seizan-sha.

仏像の命は「木」である。初めてお会いした時に、勢山師が「1000年前の仏像を修復する。そしてその仏像や新たな仏像がこれから1000年の命をつないでいく。2000年の時空を考えている」と。門外漢には言葉で聞いて、なかなかピンとくる年月ではない。仏像やその歴史に触れる機会が増えれば、その悠久の時空をほんの少し想像できるようになれるかも知れないと思っているが、さてさて。
勢山師の言葉に浅識な筆者でも感銘を受け、この師とつながっていきたいと思ったのが、今回、2回目の出会いを導いてくれたようだ。

The life of the Buddha is a tree. When I met him for the first time, Mr. Seizan said, "The Buddhist statue from 1000 years ago will be restored. The Buddha statue and the new Buddha statue will continue to link the life of 1000 years. We are thinking about the spacetime of 2000." It wasn't quite the year when I heard from the outsider Han in words. I think that if you have more opportunities to come into contact with the Buddha statue and its history, you may be able to imagine the eternal time and space for a moment.
I was impressed even by the author, who is not familiar with the words of Master Seizan, and wanted to connect with him, but this time he seemed to have led me to the second encounter.

造顕中の丈六佛(一丈六尺/ 約4.85m)「阿弥陀如来坐像」
荒削が終わり、これから形・位置などの微妙な調整をし仕上げに入るところ。そして漆を塗り、金箔を張る。

記念にということで許可をいただき後方から上り撮影していただいた。造顕中なのでこのような機会を得た。/ I was allowed to take a photo. I got a special chance because it still has been creating.
