3年前の秋分の日、高野山に登った。
どこのお寺さんでもこの日は彼岸会が行われる。ここ高野山でも壇上伽藍の金堂で彼岸会の読経が響いていた。たまたま金堂の入口で多くの信者さんが、その読経を聞きながら手を合わせていた。筆者もその片隅で皆さんと同じように手を合わせた。声明(しょうみょう)を聞くが如く、読経が体内に沁みわたるようだった。

I climbed Mt. Koya three years ago on the autumn equinox day.
A cluster amaryllis is held on this day at every temple. Even here in Koyasan, the sutras of the cluster amaryllis resonated in the Kondo of the Danjo-Garan. It happened that many believers at the entrance of the Kondo had their hands together while listening to the sutras. l also put my hands together in that corner. As you hear the statement, the sutras seemed to crawl into my body.

金堂前の椅子に腰をかけている一人の僧侶が目に入った。穏やかな表情で私を見つめているので声を掛け、しばし歓談させていただいた。人を受け容れる包容力が笑顔から溢れていた。タイの仏教僧で、数日間、高野山に研修で滞在しているとのことだった。

I saw a monk sitting on a chair in front of the Kondo. As I was gazing with a calm expression, I called out and chatted for a while. A smile was filled with the capacity to accept people. He was a Buddhist monk in Thailand and has been staying at Koyasan for a few days for training.

日常にない時空に身を置くとなぜか心がウキウキする。そういう場所がいくつかあるというのは幸せである。

When I put myself in a space-time that is not in my daily life, my heart gets excited for some reason. I am happy that there are several  places like that.
