“Time as Capital”(資本としての時間)

I believe in time as actual capital. It is the only thing all people have equally regardless of whether you were born in the U.S. or Japan, or were born into a rich family or a poor family. Some people use a lot of time for work, some people use it for studying, some people use it for playing video games with their friends, and some people use it for praying. The way time is used in our lives forms each person and makes us unique individuals.

When I was 17 years old, I wanted to study business and I got a chance I could meet Mr.shoda, who was a Japanese entrepreneur. I hoped to learn about business from him, but he didn't teach it to me. Instead, he brought a board game and played it with me. The game was "Monopoly". In the game, there are four players, each of whom have 150 thousand dollars at the beginning. They advance in the game by buying buildings or companies and negotiating with other players. When a player cash runs out, the game ends. Whoever has the most money at that time is the winner. Our match ended after only 15 minutes because my cash disappeared. At the same time, Mr.shoda's capital was over 600 thousand dollars. I was really shocked by the situation because we had been in the same positions only 15 minutes before that. He said to me: "Don't think this happens only in board games because the same things can happen in the real business world". That day was an amazing turning point in my life – not because I started to study business, but because I started to think carefully about how to best use time in my life, like money in the game.

We don't have 150 thousand dollars equally, but we have time as actual capital. I didn't want to lose like I did in the game, but I wanted to be like he did, and I regretted how I spent my life so far because I didn’t have any special skills. So, since that day, I stopped going to meetings that I think have no value, I decided to live in a dormitory to save commuting time to college, started to read a lot of books, compose songs by myself, studied machine learning, and I got an internship in a company as a data scientist.

I didn’t have anything that I could be proud of: I didn’t have any special skills: I didn’t have money: I didn’t have special career, but I had a lot of time. However, just having a lot of time doesn’t have its own value like having money does. So I convert the “Quantity” of time into something else that has value. I often imagine myself 4 years from now at the graduation ceremony, and what skills I have at that time, and now what I should do to get them.

Of course, I can’t use full time in my life completely for me because I have to also use my time for another people, like my family or friends. I am a student, so I have to study hard at my school because the tuition is paid by my parents, and in the future, I have to work hard for my family or company. But if I spend 8 hours per a day for other people, and 6 hours for sleeping, and 3 hours for eating foods and taking a shower, there is still 7 hours every day for myself. Every day, I can decide how I use this 7 hours for; I use it invest in my future. This I believe.
