Vanda Miss Joaquim (National Flower Of Singapore)

Being born and raised in Singapore, it is no surprise for every citizen to know national symbols such as national animal, bird, or flower. Among these, I can speak in confidence that the lion is the national animal of Singapore. As for the national bird, I have no idea about it until searching Google for the answer.

It is also a shame not to know the exact type of orchid which is our national flower after visiting Singapore Botanic Gardens a couple of times. Probably there are information boards providing this detail I missed due to paying too much attention on my camera. After browsing some old photos captured at the Singapore Botanic Gardens before it was honoured as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, I thought I should at least find out its name.

To my surprise, the name of the orchid is “Vanda Miss Joaquim” which I find special and unique, with a touch of femininity. In my opinion, the name suits the beauty of the flower perfectly.

I’m afraid I am unable to take any photos of our national animal as there are no wild lions in Singapore. We can only find lions in the zoo. Hopefully I’ll have the chance to see our national bird, the Crimson Sunbird in the wild one day and capture some photos of it.
