How to read "Kokoro" by Soseki Natsume (4)

The End of "Kokoro


 I'm going to be a little harsh again, so please don't read this if you're faint of heart. I think all the participants of note are in the position of wanting to tell something. There is freedom of speech, so anyone can write anything they want. While slander and defamation are not allowed, people can write whatever they want about interesting things. In reality, however, there are times when it is annoying. If you are trying to look up something old, you may be annoyed to find only characters from games or anime. Also, in various languages around the world, people are now muttering, "Soseki Natsume translated I love you as the moon is beautiful," which is already a "mistake. You just can't pretend it didn't happen. This kind of information is noise. The noise makes it difficult to convey what is really going on.

 There are some people who are professionals in the field of writing, and they publish their thoughts on Soseki's "Kokoro". For example


 Since this person seems to be an educator, I'll point out something a little harsh. It is wrong to call the teacher a coward. It's not an opinion that I like, it's a mistake.

 It is a mistake in many ways, but I will focus on the "no ending in sight" part this time. In "Kokoro", "I" appear as the writer, which is rare. This format is the same as in "The Knight Commander's Killer. The speaker of "The Knight Commander's Killer" is a portrait painter, but he is writing a novel. The "I" in "Kokoro" seems to be writing a newspaper novel. He is recollecting the events of the past. That's why the beginning is after the doctor's suicide note.

 From the beginning, I thought that there was something mysterious about him that made him unapproachable. And yet, there was a strong feeling that I had to get close to him. But for me alone, this intuition was later proven to be true, and I am glad and relieved that I had the intuition to foresee it, even if I am called youthful or ridiculous.  The refreshing feeling at the beginning of the story and the "I" that fully affirms the teacher is the present of "Kokoro. Most people do not understand the meaning of this intuition, which was later proven by facts. The first thing to understand here is "by the doctor's will. It can also be interpreted as "by Shizuka," but first let's understand that there was evidence that "I" had to approach the doctor.

 Surprisingly, many professional readers, including Kojin Karatani, have made the curious interpretation that the speaker is somehow attracted to the teacher and approaches him.  Many high school students have expressed their honest impressions that the ending was dark, but it made them think. I don't want to catch those people and get involved with them every time. However, if you have a desire to convey something, and believe that you are qualified to convey something to someone, sometimes you need to check your writing to make sure that you are not being cynical in order to confirm your qualification. When I read "Soseki Ronshusei" by Kojin Karatani, I feel embarrassed to read it because it is mostly full of misinterpretations and perversions. In the same way, he wrote that "Kojin" was divided, and he could not see the end result.

 As an easy-to-understand comparison, "Kokoro" and "Kojin" are similar to "Botchan" in form. I don't think there are many people who don't understand this structure, and I don't think there are many people who don't write essays without understanding it. However, when I read the impressions of foreigners, I found that none of them correctly understood that the intuition was later proven on the basis of facts. Well, I don't see that among the Japanese either, but I was surprised to find that there was one person who noticed it, and he denied it to the hilt.

 Kokoro" has the same structure as "Botchan," in that the teacher is already dead and the story takes the form of a recollection. It doesn't seem to be right after his death either. The position of the
