航空機のエンジンは不調を来すと緊急事態につながりますから、信頼性の高いものが採用されています。それでも使用方法が誤っていたり、過酷な環境下では最悪エンジンが爆発することもあり得ます。デトネーションと呼ばれる機体を破壊しかねない危険な操作は、絶対に回避しなければなりません。

燃料のオクタン間違い：燃料のオクタン価を間違えて、本来給油すべきガソリンよりオクタン価が低いものを使用すると、航行に必要なエンジン出力を維持しようとすれば、気筒内温度が上がります。シリンダーヘッド温度がレッドゾーンにまで上がっているのに航行を続けると、いずれエンジンは高温で爆発する恐れがあります。誤ってオクタン価が低いガソリンを給油してしまった場合、タンクから抜き取るのが賢明です。オクタン価を上げる添加剤を加える手段もありましょうが、整備士と相談してからやりましょう。

If the octane rating of the fuel is mistakenly misused, the cylinder head temperature will rise if the fuel with a lower octane rating than that intended is used in an attempt to maintain the engine output necessary for navigation. If navigation is continued even when the cylinder head temperature rises to the red zone, there is a possibility that the engine will eventually explode due to high temperature. In case of mistakenly refueling with fuel with a lower octane rating, it is wise to remove it from the tank. There is also a way of adding additives to increase the octane rating, but consult a maintenance engine

燃料の絞り過ぎ過熱：空気と燃料の混合比は12：1などエンジンごとに決まっています。一般に航空機のエンジンでは、上空へ到達するとミクスチャーを絞って適切な比率に手動で調整します。燃料のシリンダーへの流入量を絞ることで、燃料消費を節約することが出来ます。この燃料流入量を絞る操作は、排気ガス温度が急激に上昇しないよう、絞り過ぎないよう注意します。ところが高度を変更した後、特に降下して空気が濃くなり、その分燃料が沢山必要な状態になりながら、ミクスチャーをリーンに絞ったままにすると、シリンダー内温度が上昇し、ついには爆発する恐れが生じます。着陸前にミクスチャーをフルリッチにするところ、上空でリーンにしたまま着陸を試み、着陸復行でフルパワーで急上昇しようとすれば、充分起こりうる危険操作となります。

The air-fuel mix ratio for an engine is predetermined, such as 12:1 for aircraft. Generally, when ascending to higher altitudes, the mixture is manually adjusted to the appropriate ratio by leaning it. By restricting the amount of fuel entering the cylinders, fuel consumption can be reduced. However, when changing altitude, especially when descending and the air is denser, it requires more fuel and the mixture should not be leaned. If it is not adjusted, the cylinder temperature can increase rapidly, which could eventually lead to an explosion. If a pilot attempts to land while the mixture is still leaned and then suddenly increase power to gain altitude during a go-around, this is a potentially dangerous operation. To avoid this, the mixture should be set to full rich before landing.
