22-3 　同棲の夜

　ドレスアップしたホーリーは、自慢したくなるほど綺麗に輝いている。カジュアルな服装しか持って無い流雲は、不釣り合いな格好に少し気後れする。
　ホーリーが事前に予約したイタリアン・レストラン”Barolo Gril”は、邸宅から20分程で到着する。落ち着いたコーナーに案内される。

　流雲がワインで乾杯しようとすると、ホーリーが......。
「Ryu, Let's drink champagne tonight, not wine!......ワインでなく、今晩はシャンパンを飲みましょう！」
「Do you drink champagne？」
「Ryu, drink champagne when you celebrate. 」
「Is that so」　
　流雲はぎこちなく、グラスを持ち上げ「Cheers」と、小声で乾杯のしぐさを取るしかできなかった。(本当は気の利いた言葉を掛ける時なのだろうが...... )　
　落ち着かずにモゾモゾしていると、前菜がサーブされる。

「This is Eggplant Caponata. It is a Sicilian specialty, an appetizer of stewed eggplant, tomatoes, and onions on a crispy pizza crust.......これは Eggplant Caponata よ。シチリア名物の前菜、カリカリのピザ生地の上にナス、トマト、タマネギの煮込みを載せた物よ」
「.......」　
「Ryu, Ryu.....This is the first time I'm moving in with someone......誰かと同居するのは初めてだから聞くけど...... what do you want me to do?」と聞いてきたけど、どうして良いのか俺も分からないから......Holly, I hardly know anything about American culture, so I don't have an answer for you......アメリカの生活習慣を殆ど知らないから答えようがないよ.....I have to rely on you......君に頼るしかないよ」
「解ったわ......Gradually I'll live with you and I'll teach you the customs.......それじゃ徐々に生活しながら習慣を教えてあげる......First, how about living expenses?......先ず、生活費をどうする？」
「Can't I just leave the money with you?」
「Managing your living expenses is fine, but what about your allowance?.......生活費を管理するのは良いけどお小遣いはどうするのよ？......What I mean by living expenses is that the apartment at the Phipps mansion will be free of utilities too......生活費といってもフィリプス邸の居室はユティリティもタダになるから......」
「Really? I didn't know that. But how about the phone?」
「It will take some time to get a phone line. The building is a historical landmark and permission is needed? ......建物が歴史記念物だから許可がいるらしいの？......For the time being, we have to use the phone in this mansion.....しばらくは、館の電話を使用するしかないの」
（えぇ......と言うことは、光熱費もタダになるの？ 生活費が殆ど掛からないの？）

「Ryu, だからね...... Our only living expenses are for food, we should pool joint funds and use them, right?.....私たちの生活費は食費だけだから、共同資金をプールして使うようにしようか？」
「That would be fine.」
「Then let's go to the bank tomorrow and open a joint checking account......明日銀行に行ってチェッキングの共同口座を開設しましょう....... I'll make sure we use those checks to buy food......そのチェックで食品を購入するようにするわ」
（銀行口座が共有できるのか？）
　流雲はホーリーの希望を.......OK. does Holly have any requests for me?..... Sharing housework or anything?.....家事の分担とか、何かある？......と、聞いても居室もそんなに広くないし、料理は私がする......。
「You can help me when I need it......必要な時に手伝ってくれれば良いわ...... I still don't know what we need......未だ、私も何が必要か分からないわ...... I'll ask for help when I find out after we start living together. Is that okay?...... 暮らし始めてから、気が付いたらお願いするわ。それで良いかしら?...... 確かに、暮らし始めてからじゃないと解らないか。
　
　流雲は放浪旅の基地としてデンヴァーに流れ着いたが、ホーリーと巡り合い流れは大きく変わった。二人で旅する楽しさを知り、ひとり旅の虚しさを痛感した。
　実際にホーリーの故郷ニューホープを訪ね東海岸からデンヴァーそしてサウスウエストを旅した時に彼女のアメリカ史やアートへの造詣の深さに感銘を覚えた。
　そしてホーリーの「一緒に住もうよ」のラブコールに、アメリカ定住と同棲生活に夢が膨らみ、その誘惑に魅了された。ホーリーは同棲を気楽に受け止めていたが、流雲は一緒に暮らすのを機会にアメリカで暮らす足掛かりをつくりたいと考え始めていた。
　　
　その思いを......「Holly, Taking the opportunity of living together, I'd like to create some stepping stones to living in the U.S.......一緒に暮らすのを機会にアメリカで暮らす足掛かりをつくりたい」と伝える。
「Ryu, what do you mean?......どう言う意味？...... Do you feel a responsibility to live with me?......私と暮らす責任を感じてるから？」
「一緒に暮らすなら、生活の基盤を築きたい....... If we live together, I want to build a foundation for our life together.」と伝えると......。
「As a photographer?」
「カメラマンの仕事があればベストだけど、難しいだろうね......A photographer's job would be best, but it would be difficult.......今は何ができるか考えてみたい」
「Are you serious?」
「Seriously want to figure out how to work in America.......本気でアメリカで働く方法を考えたい」と話すと...... 「I'll see what I can do.」...... ホーリーは深刻そうな顔をして、首をかしげていた。

「Holly, You're not worried about your future life? Don't you worry about the cost of living?...... 君はこれからの生活に不安はないの？ 生活費の心配しないの？」
「Ryu, You don't have to be so nervous.......ナーバスにならなくても大丈夫よ...... I have a scholarship, we both got jobs, and I have a little bit of money saved up......私は奨学金が貰えるし、二人とも仕事が見つかったし、少し貯金もあるは......」
「Holy, You are optimistic. I'm worried...... 君は楽観的だね。僕は不安だけど？」
「Ryu,  There is no need to rush. Let's enjoy our new life together first!......あせらなくてもいいんじゃない。先ずは二人の新しい生活を楽しみましよう」と、ホーリーが Phipps邸のパンフレットを手渡し......「Our mansion is a great place to live......私達の住む邸宅は凄い所なのよ」と話してくれた。

　目を通すと.......「The mansion property is 9.5 acres, one basement level, two stories, 33,000 square feet of floor space, and has about 26rooms......Phipps邸の敷地は9.5エーカーあり、地下1階、地上2階建てコンクリートと木造の混構造体で建築されている。母屋の延べ床面積は33,000平方フィート、居室は26部屋に幾つかの倉庫部屋がある。敷地内には、イングリッシュ庭園、切り花園やローンボウリング・グリーン、温室などの施設がある。別棟にゲストハウスを兼ねた屋内テニスハウスがある」
（敷地が9.5AC.....ピンとこない....確か１ACが 4064.8㎡.....38,615.6㎡..... 33,000 ft²は......3065㎡あるの？？） 
「Holly, I guess so. Maybe I was being a little pessimistic......そうだね。少し悲観的になってたかも.....Indeed, it's a terrific mansion. We should enjoy being able to live in a place like this......確かに、凄い邸宅だね。こんな所に住めるのを楽しまないとね」
「Ryu, We saw the mansion briefly the other day. I'll give you a quick tour of the mansion tomorrow.......この間は簡単に邸宅を見たけど、明日は邸宅内を案内するわ」

　気分を切り替えるように、冷たいお皿にサラダを取り分けてくれる。緑の葉の上にトマトとモッレラチーズのスライスが載せられている。
「Holly, I've never had this salad before, how do you eat it?......このサラダは初めてだけど、どうやって食べるの？」
「これは Caprese Salad よ...... It's a classic Neapolitan dish. Ripe tomatoes, creamy mozzarella cheese, and just fresh Caprese basil leave......ナポリ地方の古典的な料理よ。完熟したトマト、クリーミーなモッツァレラチーズ、新鮮なカプレーゼバジルの葉だけよ...... All you need is a sprinkle of salt and olive oil......ひと振りのソルトとオリーブオイルだけで食べるのよ」
「This smell is basil? It's refreshingly sweet and bitter, like mint...... ミントのような爽やかな甘みと苦味があるね」
「RYU, I see it's your first time. I'd season it with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper to make it easier to eat...... オリーブオイルと海塩とコショウで味付けすると、食べやすくなるわ」

「How many days will we stay in the former Mrs. Margaret's room? Can that room be used any way you like?...... 元マーガレット夫人の部屋に何日位泊まるのかな？ あの部屋はどのようにも好きに使用できるの？」 
「We'll probably be staying there for a week......1週間は滞在すると思うわ」......そして微笑みながら......「And I get to take that lovely marble bath......あの素敵な大理石のお風呂にも入れるしね」と、嬉しそうに流雲を見つめる。

　ホーリーは......「Ryu, Would I like to order "Bistecca alla Fiorentina" for the main course? Do I want you to celebrate with us tonight?......メインに“Bistecca alla Fiorentina” をシェアしたいんだけど？ 今晩は二人のお祝いにしたいの？」
「Holly, I don't know "Bistecca alla Fiorentina", what kind of dish is it?」
「The Bistecca alla Fiorentina is an Italian steak, but Ryu likes steak, don't you?.....  イタリアのステーキよ、リュウはステーキ好きでしょ？」
 「Of course I love steak.」
「This is a typical Tuscan steak dish usually made with T-bone steak of the young steer beef, seasoned with garlic and rosemary, then grilled over a hot fire.....このステーキは、トスカーナの代表的なステーキ料理で、若牛のTボーンステーキをニンニクとローズマリーで味付けし、炭火で焼いたものよ」
「I've never had it before, but it looks delicious‼..... 美味しそうだね‼」

　シェフがワゴンにT-bone steak の塊りが現れると......「Traditionally, Bistecca alla Fiorentina steak is cooked over hot fire coals and then grilled on a smokeless lava plate at the table!!.......ビステッカ・フィオレンティーナは炭火で焼いた後、無煙の溶岩プレートでテーブルで焼くのが伝統です！」と調理を始める。　
　ジューシーに焼き上がったT-bone steak が、プレートに取り分けられる。蒸したブロッコリーと焼き茄子パルメザンが添えられた。
　食後に小振りのカップにコーヒーがサーブされる。フワッとスモーキーな香りが鼻を抜ける。口に含んだ瞬間、強い苦味のある濃厚な味広がったが、後味がスッキリしてる。
（俺の好きなコーヒーの味だ.....）

「Espresso is too rich for me, but Ryu seems to like it!.....エスプレッソは私には濃厚な味過ぎるけど.....」
「Every morning I have a cup of coffee brewed with Bialetti Espresso Pot..... 毎朝、ビアレッティで淹れたコーヒーを飲んでいるからね......Holly, a little cream makes it milder and richer. I like the taste with cream better too.」
「True. So mild when you add cream....... クリームを入れるとマイルドになるのね......I like this one better.」
　豪華な食事には淹れたてのコーヒーは欠かせない。バランスのとれた味わい深い食事を引き立てる完璧な一杯のコーヒーだった.....。

　邸宅に帰る。他人の寝室のようにひんやりと冷え切っていた。
「It's cold in this room.  Ryu, can you turn on the heat?..... 暖房を入れてくれる？」
「Do you have heating?」
「The mansion is centrally heated. The grill under the window is steam heated..... 窓下のグリルが、スチィーム暖房よ」
　蓋を開けて、スイッチを入れると、ターン、ターンと何かを叩く音が響き渡る。
「Holly, What is that sound?」
「It's the sound of air or hot water flowing through pipes. It's a heating/cooling system that uses low-pressure steam heat to heat a room or evaporate and cool it...... パイプの中を空気かお湯が流れる音よ。低圧蒸気の熱で室内を暖めたり、蒸発冷却する冷暖房システムなの」
「Wow. Is this a central heating and cooling system?」

　古い暖房システムだが、立ち上がりは良く、部屋は直ぐに暖かくなる。
　部屋が暖まると......「Can you fill the bathtub with hot water?..... バスタブにお湯溜めてくれる？......やっぱりそうなるよな......OK......」
「Marble baths are hard to heat up, please use hotter water........大理石のバスは温まりにくいから、熱めのお湯にしてね」
「Ok.....Holly, Well, you can get on the bus now.」
「Ryu, Feels so nice and warm. You, too. Come on in.」

　流雲がバスルームに入ると、ホーリーは嬉しそうに微笑みながら、両手を広げ優しく抱きしめてきた。バスタブの中でゆっくりと身体を寄せ合う。唇を重ねる。
　二人の目が欲望の炎に包まれ、互いの飢餓感を満たすように、水しぶきが舞い上げながら激しく抱き合い身体を求め合う。

　バスタブを出ると、ベッドに直行する。
　広い敷地にある邸宅は驚くほどの静けさに包まれている。
　アンティークな家具に囲まれた静かな夜に、コロニアルなベッドの上で、互いの体をまさぐり合う姿は刺激的だった。
　激しく抱きしめ、求め合いながら欲望に身を任せる。
　彼女の指先が俺の肌を這い回す。俺は唇で彼女の身体を優しく愛撫する。
　刻が満る。熱烈な欲情に包み込まれ、互いの情念の高まりに身を委ねて、激しく肉体を求め合い熱烈な愛を交わした。
　二人は一つになり、二人の愛が邸宅に響き渡る。
