日本英語を創造するために翻訳ソフトと格闘する

語学教育の現場ではいまでも翻訳ソフトは禁止である。大多数の英語教師は生徒に翻訳ソフトを使ってはならぬと教育する。しかしこの数年、翻訳ソフトは長足の進化を遂げていて、短文ならばその翻訳精度は極めて高い。囲碁や将棋の棋士たちがコンピューター囲碁やコンピューター将棋を作動させてその力を鍛えてあげているように、開発途上製品であるが、このソフトを作動させて語学トレーニングに励むとき、学習者の英語力をまた飛躍的に向上させるはずである。いまここで翻訳ソフトを駆動して私たちの英語力を鍛えるために二つの小説に取り組んでみよう。

現在の翻訳ソフトがどれほどの力を持っているかをヘミングウェイの「老人と海」とオースティンの「高慢と偏見」の二つの小説の冒頭の部分を取り組ませて検証してみよう。ヘミングウェイの「老人と海の」は次のように英文でスタートしていく。

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parent had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in anther boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.
The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun bring from its reflection on the tropic sea on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his had the deep creased scare from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colour as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up, “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money,”

翻訳ソフトとは、ひたすらジャンクワード、ガラクタ言語を生み出す電子装置にすぎないと非難する人々に拍手を送るような日本語になっている。とうてい使える日本語ではない。グーグルの翻訳ソフトを開発システムが、この「老人と海」を言葉の魔術師たちがすぐれた日本語にしている、その日本語を採集しなかったからだろう。英語と日本語を知り尽くした語学の達人たちがこの英文をどのように翻訳されているかいうと、まず福田恒存訳でこう訳されている。

　かれは年をとっていた。メキシコ湾流に小舟を浮かべ、ひとりで魚をとって日をおくっていたが、一匹も釣れない日が八十四日もつづいた。はじめの四十日はひとりの少年がついていた。しかし一匹も釣れない日が四十日もつづくと、少年の両親は、もう老人がすっかりサラオになってしまったのだといった。サラオとはスペイン語で最悪の事態を意味する言葉だ。少年の両親のいいつけにしたがい、べつの舟に乗り込んで漁に出かけ、最初の一週間で、みごとな魚を三匹も釣り上げた。老人が来る日も来る日も空の小舟が帰ってくるのを見るのが、少年にはなによりも辛かった。かれはいつも老人を迎えにいき、巻網やヤスや銛を、それからマストに巻きつけた帆などをしまいこむ手伝いをしてやった。帆はあちこちに粉袋の継ぎが当ててあったが、それをマストにぐるぐる巻きにした格好は、永遠の敗北を象徴する旗印としか見えなかった。
　老人の四肢はやせこけ、項には深い皺が刻みこまれていた。熱帯の海が反射する太陽の熱で、老人の頬には皮膚癌をおもわせる褐色のしみができ、それが顔の両側にずっと下の方まで点々とひろがっている。両手にはところどころ深い傷痕が見える。綱を操って大魚をとらえめるときできはたものだ。が、いずれも新しい傷ではない。魚の棲まぬ砂漠の蝕壊地帯のように古く乾からびていた。
　この男に関するかぎり、なにもかも古かった。ただ眼だけがちがう。それは海とおなじ色をたたえ、不屈な生気をみなぎらせていた。
「サンチャンゴ」少年は小舟を引きあげてある砂地を登りながらいった。「また一緒に行きたいなあ。金もいくらかたまったもの」

今度はこの福田訳を、翻訳ソフトはどのような英語に転換していくのかを検証してみよう。

Everything about this man was old. Only the eyes are different. It had the same color as the sea and was full of fortitude.
"Santango" boy climbed a sandy place, pulling up a small boat. "I want to go again.　Some money was too much. "

もう一作の名訳がある。野崎孝訳である。私は福田訳よりもはるかに原文のリズムや原文のもつ体質を捕らえているように思える。私はこの野崎訳を好む。

この福田訳とはまったく違った日本語を果たして野崎訳を翻訳ソフトはどのような英文に転換させていくのだろうか。
