隣を歩く友人は、楽しそうにビーチボーイズの「Wouldn't it be nice」を陽気に口ずさんでいた。僕たちは冬空の下をコートのポケットに手を入れながら畦道を歩いていた。
僕も友人も、この曲が大好きだ。
とても素敵なラブソングだ。
"新しい一日の朝に僕たちは目を覚ませたら、
きっと素敵かもしれないね。
一緒に目一杯の時間を使ったあと、
夜を通して二人で抱きしめあったりして。
僕たちの過ごす時間はすごく幸せな時間だよ。

「ねえ、この曲の二人はどうなったのかな？」

友人はそう言って、曲の続きを歌いだした。
この曲には終始”彼女”や”君”という表現が出てこない。
トニーとブライアンは誰でもない、ミステリアスな存在をこの曲で恋焦がれていたのかもしれない。
僕はその隣で、トニーとブライアンがこの曲を作っている姿を想像した。
だが、彼らがそんな乙女心を持っているとは到底思えなかった。
「でも世間一般では、ストレートなラブソングとして認識されているよ」
「みんな綺麗なロマンチックが好きなのさ。夜景が好きなのと同じさ」
「そんなもんかな？」
「そんなもんさ」
「そうだね、そっちの方が”素敵かもしれないね”」
冬風がより寒く感じた。
僕はマフラーに顔をうずめ、友人の歌に耳を澄ませ、冬の涸れ果てた水田を歩き続けた。
その殺風景さは救いのない男の恋心と同じなような気がした。
