The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
神は人間を連れてきてエデンの園に置き、園を耕し世話をさせた

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
そして神は人間に命令して言った「園のどんな木からも食べてよし、だが善悪の知識の木のは食べてはならん、食べたら死ぬで」

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
それから神は言った「人間がひとりぼっちなのは良くない、彼に合う助ける人を作ろっと」

Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them.
そして地面から神は、あらゆる野の獣とあらゆる空の鳥を形作り、人間のところへ持ってきて、人間がそれらを何と呼ぶか見てみた

And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.
そして人間がそれぞれ呼んだものが、その生き物の名前になった。人間は、すべての家畜、空の鳥、野の獣に名前をつけた

But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
でもまだアダムにぴったりの助ける者は見つからなかった

以後だいたいアダムと呼ぶことにする

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
そこで神はアダムをぐっすり寝かせ、寝ている間にろっ骨を一本とり、肉でそこをふさいだ

And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,
そして神はアダムから取ったろっ骨で女性を作って、アダムのところへ連れてきた。そこでアダムは言った

“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
これぞ、やっと、私の骨の中の骨、肉の中の肉、男から取り出されたから、女と呼ぼう

ヘブライ語で男がイシュで、だから女をイシャーと呼ぼう、ということらしい

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
こうして男は父母を離れて妻と固く結びつき、ふたりはひとつの肉となることとなった

ここにすでにはっきりと貞操厳守で離婚禁止みたいなことなのかも
現代のカトリックもまだややその辺りに厳しいと知られる通り
今後のこの聖書の物語に、ギリシャ神話や古事記みたいな
男女の終焉や重婚のような展開がないのか注目していこうと思う
貞操厳守と離婚禁止は同じ意味で
ひとり以外とは一生やらないの意味で
現代の単なる一夫一妻ではない、ということになる

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
アダムも妻も裸であったが、恥ずかしくはなかった

妻と女というのも同じ意味であり
結婚制度による呼称変化以前の状態ということになる
