著作権登録は 'From Both Sides, Now' (19 June 1967; Gandalf Publishing Co.)で、1967年頃はジョニは本歌のことをその題で呼んでいる
この題を思いついたのはカナダ生まれの米国の小説家 Saul Bellow の 𝐻𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑅𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝐾𝑖𝑛𝑔 (1959) からヒントを得たという。アフリカへ飛行中、雲を上下から眺められる時代には人は死を恐るべきでないとの言葉を Henderson が発する一節があり、それが心に取りついていたらしい。そこから、最終連の 'It's life's illusions I recall' という、まるで人生をホログラムと観るような着想にまで至る
冒頭、一聴すると 'Rows and flows' と聞こえるが、本当は 'Rows and floes'.
