（３）丸谷才一の教師時代

    丸谷才一は修士課程時代に英語教師として桐朋(とうほう)学園に勤務しました。当時の教え子には指揮者の小澤征(せい)爾(じ)や作曲家でピアニストの高橋悠治がいます。
 
「わたしの声について……小澤征爾だって高橋悠治だって、わたしが声を張り上げて　
『それは猫であるべくあまりに大きすぎるからライオンにちがひない』なんてことを教えてやつたのである。」（『男のポケット』）
 
    丸谷才一と開高健、井上光晴は「文壇三大音声(おんじょう)」と呼ばれていました。一九五一一年一月、東京都立北園高等学校講師（一九五四年三月まで）、一九五二年高千穂高等学校講師、一九五三年九月国学院大学講師をしました。一九五四年の春まで、同人雑誌「現代評論」の同人仲間であった山口瞳が同じ学校の学生として在籍していました。一九五四年四月、同大学助教授に昇進。ここで作家、評論家の中野幸次らと知りあうこととなったのです。一九六五年三月、国学院大学を退職。東京大学英文科非常勤講師として四月から二年間「ジェイムズ・ジョイス」を講義、一九八四年四月から十月まで東京大学文学部講師をつとめました。

(3) Maruya Saiichi’s Time as a Teacher

            Maruya Saiichi worked as an English teacher at Toho Gakuen during his master's degree program. His former students included a conductor Seiji Ozawa and a composer and pianist Yuji Takahashi.
 
``About my voice... Seiji Ozawa and Yuji Takahashi, I raise my voice.
``It must be a lion because it's too big to be a cat.''

             Maruya Saiichi, Ken Kaiko, and Mitsuharu Inoue were known as the ``three great voices of the literary world.'' In January 1951, he became a lecturer at Tokyo Metropolitan Kitazono High School (until March 1954), then at Takachiho High School in 1952, and in September 1953 at Kokugakuin University. In the spring of 1954, Hitomi Yamaguchi, a fellow doujinshi from the doujinshi magazine "Gendai Hyoron", was enrolled as a student at the same school. In April 1954, he was promoted to assistant professor at the same university. It was here that he met the writer and critic Koji Nakano and others. In March 1965, he retired from Kokugakuin University. He lectured on ``James Joyce'' for two years from April as a part-time lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Tokyo, and from April to October 1984, he served as a lecturer in the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tokyo.  (To be continued)
