６　漱石と阿部次郎　（２）

　漱石との書簡などが多数ある。なかでも『門』の批評に関する一九一二年（大正元）の漱石の手紙がおもしろい。　

大正元年十月十二日（土）　阿部次郎宛て　書簡

　拝復。葉書をありがとう。『門』が出たときから今日まで誰も何もいってくれものは一人もありませんでした。私は近頃孤独という事に慣れて芸術上の同情を受けないでもどうかこうか暮らして行けるようになりました。従って自分の作物に対して賞賛の声などは全く予期していません。しかし『門』の一部分が貴方に読まれて、そうして貴方を動かしたという事を貴方の口から聞くと嬉しい満足が湧いて出ます。私はこの満足に対して貴方に感謝しなければ義理が悪いと思います。私は私が喜んであなたのアップリシエーションを受けた事を明言するためにこの手紙を書きます。

『彼岸過迄』はまだ二、三部残っています。もし読んで下さるなら一部小包

で送って上げます。それとも忙しくてそれどころでなければ差控ます。虚に乗じて君の同情を貪るような我儘を起こして今度の作物の上にも『門』同様の鑑賞を強いる故意(わざ)とらしき行為を避けるためわざと伺うのです。いずれ拝眉の上

万々。

　　　There are many letters written by Soseki. Of particular interest is Soseki's letter from 1912 (Taisho 1) regarding his criticism of ”The Gate.” 　

Saturday, October 12, 1919 Letter to Jiro Abe

Hello again. Thank you for the postcard. From the time "The Gate" came out until today, no one has said anything to me.

　　　There wasn't a single one. Lately, I've gotten used to being alone and have been able to live my life without receiving artistic sympathy. Therefore, I do not expect any praise for my crops. However, I feel happy and satisfied when I hear from you that a part of ``The Gate'' was read by you and that it moved you. I think it would be wrong of me not to thank you for this satisfaction. I am writing this letter to declare that I have gladly accepted your appreciation.

　　　There are still two or three books of ``Higan Sugimade' left.   If you would like to read it, I will send you some of it in a package. Or if you're too busy to do that, I'll refrain from doing so. I purposely ask this question to avoid the deliberate act of taking advantage of the falsehood and coveting your sympathy, forcing you to admire the next crop in the same way as the
``Gate.''
I shall tell you all about the matter when I have the pleasure of seeing you.
