6 Haiku(俳句):


Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. It contains 17 syllables(5-7-5 syllables). Haiku contains a kigo, which is a word that expresses the season. Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) is one of the most famous haiku poets in Japan. He traveled across Japan to make many haiku. Japanese haiku is traditionally written in a single line, while haiku in English usually appears in three lines. A good example is Mastsuo Basho’s verse, [Furuikwya(5 syllables), Kawazu(a kigo) Tobikomu (7 syllables), Mizunooto(5 syllables): Old pond/ A frog jumps in/ Water’s sound. How to make an English haiku: 1. Decide what you want to express. 2. Choose the kigo or a seasonal word. 3. Describe the idea that you have in mind in three lines of a short English poem.
