NVDACon2018 Transcript(English)

This is a transcript of my talk at NVDACon 2018.

(Title) NVDA-friendly, highly accurate OCR using ScanSnap(R) document scanner

Hello, my name is Minako Nonogaki. I'm from Japan. Thank you for introducing me and warm welcome me here NVDACon.
I'm in NVDA Japanese team.
NVDA Japanese team translates NVDA into Japanese when update, and develops original functions such as Japanese language input system.
I'm also in another group in Japan, NVDA helpdesk. NVDA helpdesk answers questions about NVDA and explains how to use NVDA in Japan by phone, e-mail, skype, etc.
In the future, NVDA helpdesk in Japan want to answer questions from abroad also. If you are intrested in it, we appreciate if you mail us. Mail Address is, contact @nvda.help (remove space before @). We can accept the mail language, English or Japanese.

Today I talk about document scanner ScanSnap ix100.
Blind or visually impaired person has difficulty in reading documents printed on papers.
I want to suggest to read such printed paper document by using document scanner and OCR, optical character recognition.
In this case, it is important that the software, such as drivers, for the document scanner can be used with NVDA or other screen readers.
Then I found that the ScanSnap is easy to use with NVDA, and high performance OCR software ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap is bundled with ScanSnap. So, the ScanSnap can be a powerful tool for scanning and OCR and reading printed paper document.

The size of the ScanSnap ix100 is, like a large pencil box. Width about 28cm, depth about 5cm, height about 4cm.
Weight is 400g.
The scannable size of the paper is A4, width 21.6cm length 36.0cm.The maximum length can be longer, to 86.3cm.
ix100 scans one side of the paper.
The ScanSnap has Japanese version and Worldwide version.
OCR lineup includes America, Europe, Arabia, and Asia.

Then, I explain how to use ScanSnap ix100 with demonstration.
First, connect the scanner to PC by USB cable. Then, install the driver in the PC.
Open the cover of the scanner, which operates as power switch.
Like this, you can hear the report from PC that the scansnap is now ready to scan.
Then, set the paper. This is an NVDACon document printed on the paper. The paper can be inserted along the opened cover. And push the button on the scanner to start scan. There is only one push button on the scanner. The shape of the button is rectangular, its four corners are rounded.
Like this, when scan started, a window showing a status of the scanner appears in the screen of the PC. The paper goes through the slit of the scanner.
The contents of the window are read out by NVDA.
When one sheet of paper has been scanned, button for finishing scanning appears and is focused. The label of the button is read out by NVDA. Until the button is pushed, set paper is scanned continuously one by one. Like this, second sheet of paper can be set and scan starts automatically. You can check focused button by NVDA+Tab key before push.
At the end of the scan, you can stop reading of the NVDA and push the focused finishing scanning button by enter or space key.
After this button is pushed, choose how to process the scanned data. There's many buttons for them. Labels of these are correctly read out. It is very important thing.
These buttons can be browsed by left or right arrow key. Continuously pressing left or right arrow key, all the buttons can be accessed. These buttons are aligned vertically 3 rows, horizontally 6 columns, so up or down button can be used also for shortcut.
There are buttons 'ABBYY scan to word, ABBYY scan to excel, ABBYY scan to powerpoint'. If these buttons are pushed, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap processes scanned data, and the scanned image data is processed by OCR and characters are converted into text data in the word, excel or powerpoint file. Now I push ABBYY scan to word button.
Like this, the sentences processed by the OCR are read out. Actually, the paper says, now I read with my eyes.
At this time, there is no or few mistake.
Today I chosen ABBYY scan to word, but there is another option for OCR. There is another button labeled 'save to Google Drive'. If Google drive is connected, the scanned data can be saved in the Google Drive. Then, when the data is opened by Google document in the Google drive, the data is processed by OCR function of the Google Drive.

Today I talked about the method for using ScanSnap connected to PC.
In addition, the ScanSnap can be connected to iPhone using Wifi, and the iPhone application for it works well with VoiceOver.
And more, the ScanSnap can be connected preliminarily to a cloud drive such as Google Drive and dropbox, so paper can be scanned by ScanSnap alone and saved to the cloud drive.

Thus, a document printed on the paper can be read well using document scanner ScanSnap and bundled OCR software ABBYY FineReader using NVDA. This is an end of my talk.
