Transitioning from Medicine to Medical Marketing: What have I learned in the past year

Introduction:


I am a former radiology doctor decide to find a new career path in medical marketing after gained my Master digree in Medical Science. Embarking on a career change can be both daunting and exhilarating, especially when transitioning from a medical background to the dynamic field of medical marketing. I choose to enter this sector thinking my prior experience in medicine could be of use. Today, I will share my experience in medical marketing industry and whether did my medical background help me in this field.

First, let me start this by answering "whether my medical background helped me in the field of medical marketing", the answer is: No. The reason is, being a medical expertise only requires professional knowledge. By being a medical marketer, you have to know how the healthcare system works, how the hospital system works. Constantly pay attention to governments healthcare policy, come up with new idea to make your product more attractive to the hospitals and doctors who use your products to patients. That is a totally different skills set to me, maybe it can be a little bit helpful for understanding the how the hospital side work, but for the whole process to works, you have to cultivate new skills and gain new perpective of thinking. Medical marketing in Japan, faces unique challenges and opportunities shaped by cultural, regulatory, and technological factors. Here's what I learned and experienced of medical marketing in Japan.

・Regulatory Framework:
In Japan, strict regulations are in place for medical marketing to protect patients well-being and prevent falls advertising. Marketers are obligated to follow strict guidelines concerning advertising content, claims, and disclosures
to maintain regulatory standards.
・Educational Approach:
Japanese consumers approach healthcare with caution and prioritize trust and credibility when making medical decisions. As a result, medical marketing in Japan often takes an educational approach, providing valuable information and resources to empower patients to make informed choices about their healthcare. Marketers focus on educating healthcare professionals and patients about the benefits, risks, and appropriate use of medical products and services.
・Cultural Sensitivities:
Cultural sensitivities play a significant role in medical marketing in Japan. Direct and aggressive marketing stratigies are generally frowned upon, and marketers must use a more subtle and respectful approach. Building trust, providing accurate information are essential for successful medical marketing campaigns in Japan.

Healthcare professionals, particularly physicians, plays a crucial role in medical decision-making in Japan. Medical marketing often targets healthcare professionals through educational seminars, conferences, and peer-reviewed
publications. Building relationships with key opinion leaders and thought leaders in the medical community can help marketers gain credibility and influence prescribing behavior.

media to reach healthcare professionals and patients. Digital marketing tactics, including search engine optimization (SEO) and social media advertising, are becoming increasingly important for promoting medical products and services in Japan.

Patient engagement is gaining importance in medical marketing in Japan, as patients become more active participants in their healthcare decisions.
