ハンコというと今は時代遅れの象徴のような扱われ方をされがちだけれど、私はとっても便利だと思っている。
実は今自分の人生で一番ハンコを使っている。というのも、子供達が幼稚園・小学校に入ってから、諸々手続き書類、連絡帳に体温や宿題チェック、音読カード、持ち物チェック…毎日毎日山ほどのサインが必要になる。
デジタル化が進んでいるとはいえ、学校においてはまだまだ紙がメイン。
それは手書きでも良いのだけれど、何十個と名字を書くことの大変さよ・・・特にうちの名字、画数多い。。。

ハンコについてはそれまで特に何とも思ってなかったけれど、そこでハンコの便利さ、ラクさを知ることに。シャチハタはポンポン押していけばいいだけなの、書くより全然良い！今は常にポケットに予備のハンコを入れているくらいだ。

もちろん便利さもあるけれど、ハンコ文化は日本人の大切なアイデンティティでもあると思う。通常のハンコのデザインのバリエーションの多さや美しさやも素晴らしいし、シャチハタのハンコにもイラストがついている可愛いものがあったり色々なバージョンがあって、欧米人が自分のサインを大事にするのと同じように自分のハンコは自分自身を表すものでもある、と思う。

ハンコをデジタル化の敵とするのはあまりにも安直すぎるのではないかなあ、と思うのだ。

While the use of personal seals, or 'hanko,' may be considered somewhat outdated and symbolic of a bygone era, I find them incredibly convenient. In fact, they have become an integral part of my life, especially now that my children are in kindergarten and elementary school. Various procedures, paperwork, communication notebooks requiring daily signatures for temperature checks, homework verification, reading cards, possession checks—every day demands a mountain of signatures. Despite the ongoing digitization, paper remains prevalent in schools. Handwriting is acceptable, but the labor of writing dozens of family names, especially ours with its complex character count, is quite challenging.

I hadn't thought much about seals until then, but I came to appreciate their usefulness and ease. With a simple stamp from a Shachihata (self-inking stamp), it's so much easier than writing! I even carry a spare seal in my pocket at all times now.

Beyond the convenience, I believe the culture of using personal seals is a significant part of Japan's identity. The variety and beauty of traditional seal designs are remarkable. Even Shachihata stamps come with cute illustrations, offering different versions and styles. Similar to how individuals in the West value their signatures, one's personal seal in Japan is a representation of oneself.

Criticizing the use of seals as being opposed to digitization seems overly simplistic. Seals play a unique and valuable role in our cultural identity.
