🗒"The Tale of Genji" is a Japanese novel written in the middle of the Heian period. A total of 54 chapters, first published in 1008 (Kanko 5), and was turned into a painting at the end of the Heian period as ``The Tale of Genji Emaki.'' The author, Murasaki Shikibu, was one of the masters of waka poetry in the middle of the Heian period, and together with his daughter Daini Sani, he has been well-known to this day as the poet of ``Hyakunin Isshu'' and ``Nyobo Thirty-Six Poems.'' This is the only narrative work that Murasaki Shikibu left during his lifetime.[Note 1] Murasaki Shikibu, who lived during the mid-Heian period when the aristocracy was at its peak in Japanese history, and was in daily contact with the inner workings of the imperial court, depicts the aristocratic society of the time through stories composed of 795 waka poems.
