同社は、健康被害につながった可能性が高い「未知の成分」がプベルル酸であると２５日にほぼ特定し、厚労省に報告したことを明らかにした。プベルル酸は青カビから発生し、毒性が非常に強いという。すぐに公表しなかった理由については「自社では判断がつかなかった」とした。

比較的弱い抗生物質であるとの報告がある[8]。グラム陽性菌にはある程度の効果がありますが、グラム陰性菌には弱い効果があります。一方で、抗マラリア効果が報告されており[10]、クロロキン耐性プラスモジウムK-1株に対するin vitro IC50は0.05μMである[11]。生体内毒性も高く、マウスを用いた評価では、5 mg/kg x 2 皮下投与後 3 日目までに 5 匹中 4 匹が死亡した[11]。
