You Still Don't Know GORO - Part 1 -

writer : osakana.eth

What is this article about?

The purpose is to write about the greatness of the GORO project from the perspective of someone who has been involved in the art world. In the first part, I will only talk about the introduction and CryptoGoros and OrdinalGoros.

It is an undeniable fact that GORO is an expert in the field of art, and I believe everyone agrees that each of the works he has presented is truly remarkable. However, most people probably find it difficult to articulate exactly what makes them so great.

In this article, I aim to highlight the greatness of the GORO project from the perspective of osakana, hoping to provide insight for everyone viewing the GORO project.

It's important to article that osakana's expertise lies not in painting, so I will generally refrain from discussing the visual aspects of the works. Instead, I will focus on the conceptual aspects.

One of the reasons osakana likes the GORO project is because it is a project that genuinely engages with art. There are many other reasons, but I will save those for another occasion.

Checking out GORO's work!! (Part 1)

After a lengthy introduction, let's get to the main content.
GORO's works encompass a variety of pieces, including those from the HEN (tezos), but here we'll focus on four representative works:

Additionally, we'll be omitting basic information about each piece. (For example: CryptoGoros consists of a total of 2000 pieces, etc.)

  • CryptoGoros

  • OrdinalGoros (Briefly)

  • MiniGoros (Explained in Part 2)

  • SolGoros (Explained in Part 2)

  • NeverNeverNfts (Explained in Part 2)

CryptoGoros

Day 2

This is the piece that GORO mentioned on Twitter, expressing how important it is to him. The greatness of this work is summarized in the following description written in the early days:

This piece is a mashup of "100 Nichi Go ni Shinu Wani", "Newspaper and Self-Portrait" by Yoshimura Yoshio, and "CryptoPunks."

Yes, at the point this description was made, GORO has already won.

One of the key elements emphasized when viewing contemporary art is the concept of context. The work created by referencing each of these individual pieces is what we call CryptoGoros. Additionally, without delving into speculation that deviates from his description, I personally predict that after the completion of Day 2000, there will be even more works that incorporate the context of many more pieces.

Now, let's take a closer look at how GORO aims to shape CryptoGoros by referencing these works.

Yoshimura Yoshio's "Newspaper and Self-Portrait"

According to the content GORO has described in various places, it seems that the self-portrait element is what makes it artistic. Among the three works mentioned by him, "Newspaper and Self-Portrait" by Yoshimura Yoshio might be the least familiar to the Crypto world community, and I believe it is also one of the most intriguing elements that make up CryptoGoros. Let's delve deeper into this aspect.

Firstly, for those who want a detailed explanation of "Newspaper and Self-Portrait," the contents provided by Bijutsu Techo (Art Notebook) below are informative and easy to understand, so I recommend reading it if you want to learn more.

I believe the work referenced by GORO is likely "Newspaper and Self-Portrait 2009," so I will focus on that here. In simple terms, it is a series of artworks created by purchasing a newspaper every day from January 1st, 2009, and drawing a self-portrait on top of each newspaper.

It's truly impressive.
What's fascinating about this piece is that since the self-portraits are drawn after reading the newspaper of the day, they reflect facial expressions influenced by the content of the news.

"The Newspaper and Self-Portrait" and CryptoGoros

Let's take a look at CryptoGoros then. Similar to "The Newspaper and Self-Portrait," GORO's self-portrait is drawn every day. What's interesting about CryptoGoros is that instead of "newspaper news," it reflects events from the crypto world or events that happened to GORO himself on that day (not necessarily every time).
Let's explore three specific examples:

  • Patterns documenting events in the crypto world

Day293

This CryptoGoros was created on the day when MoonBirds became a hot topic. In addition to this, there are many other pieces where events from the crypto world, such as Kevin and famous collectible NFTs, serve as motifs.

  • Events in the World Pattern:

Day245

This CryptoGoros features blocks reminiscent of tanks and the Ukrainian flag. It was created as a motif inspired by the Ukraine war.

  • Events Involving GORO Pattern:

Day315

This CryptoGoros was created by GORO himself after the Terra incident, which caused a significant crash in the prices of LUNA and UST, resulting in GORO losing all his assets in LUNA at that time. It is a remarkably beautiful piece that links events in the crypto world with GORO's personal experiences.

New Value Created by CryptoGoros

Considering the above characteristics, imagine what the series of CryptoGoros will look like after Day 2000. This collection of artworks, spanning 2000 days, will be a massive record not only of events in the crypto world and society but also of GORO's life itself. While being a very human diary of GORO, it will also serve as a comprehensive record of the crypto world itself.

It goes without saying that there is no project undertaking such a grand endeavor, making this a pioneering initiative in history. (If there is such a project, please let me know.) As someone with admittedly low levels of expertise as an investor, I have no clue what the prices will be like after Day 2000. However, I firmly believe that such a grand piece of work cannot go unrecognized. It will undoubtedly be acknowledged in the world of fine art that GORO dreams of being recognized in.

OrdinalGoros

Please check out the detailed explanation of OrdinalGoros in the following article.(Japanese)

This article will provide only a brief overview.

Ordinals Overview

In a nutshell, Ordinals are a technology that allows for the attachment of images, music, videos, etc., to the smallest unit of currency (satoshi - SAT) on the Bitcoin network.

Compared to NFTs on other chains, Ordinals have strengths and weaknesses (including osakana's perspective):

Strengths:

  • Superior permanence

  • Larger capacity for attachments compared to Ethereum

Weaknesses:

  • Inability to create intricate mechanisms using programming

  • Overall, still in an immature stage

Characteristics of OrdinalGoros: Context of Counterparty

OrdinalGoros #4

Before 2017, there was a time when the Counterparty protocol was popular. It positioned itself as an extension of Bitcoin, allowing for the issuance of original tokens on the Bitcoin network. Similar to what the NFT community is now, albeit on a smaller scale, it attracted people who enjoyed blockchain technology (osakana entered the scene in early 2018, so did not experience it in real-time).
During that time, there was a global boom with the Rarepepe project on Counterparty. You might have come across Pepe the frog as a meme in various corners of the crypto world. The Rarepepe project created satirical artworks using Pepe and enjoyed them. OrdinalGoros were created in the context of this project, leveraging its cultural significance.

Characteristics of OrdinalGoros: Inscription

All Ordinals have an Inscription, which is a number assigned automatically in chronological order starting from 1.

The fact that Inscriptions are issued sequentially from 1 means that inevitably, you can tell at what stage the collection was issued. It's a reality one can't help but feel when observing the NFT market that the market tends to deem lower-numbered items more valuable. (Personally, I don't fully agree with the culture of pricing based on these numbers.) Let's take a look at the Inscriptions of OrdinalGoros:
#1 - #3 : In the 60,000s
#4 - #5 : In the 80,000s
#6 - #101 : In the 100,000s

Due to the timing of their creation, there is some variation, but especially for #1 - #5 , the numbers are below 100,000. At this stage, they aren't considered "young numbers," but with various collections being issued at a staggering speed, osakana believes they will soon be recognized as such in the not-too-distant future. However, as osakana already owns #3 , it would sound too much like boasting to say more, so I'll stop here...

This is a story of the future.

That concludes the explanation of CryptoGoros and OrdinalGoros.
Since I've delved into some rather complicated topics, let me share a story about the future that osakana is looking forward to. (Pure imagination)
========
On a certain day in 2026, Day 2000 was depicted, and the artwork was sold for 5639 ETH.
The proceeds were transferred in full to the "Art University Coin Parking DAO," and art universities across Japan became coin parking lots.
The moment GORO confirmed the sale, he muttered "POW" with a satisfied expression, then immersed himself in a pot full of oil, quietly becoming Fried GORO.
The next day, in the VR space, the GORO church was filled with believers from all over the world, and GORO's funeral was held.
While looking at the wall lined with CryptoGoros, everyone gathered around with KFC in hand, reminiscing.
"Remember the tomb GORO from Day 315? That was hilarious."
"Day 288, such nostalgia. After going crazy at ANAP, GORO threw away that ANAP and created this Crigoro."
"Why is Day 305 the only one with low resolution?"
"305 was when GORO accidentally uploaded a low-quality image."
Each person shares memories of GORO and the 2000 days spent in the crypto world, their expressions a mix of laughter and tears.
And then, they gradually realize.
Where we stand now, that's web56.
