ONE OK ROCKの最新アルバム“Eye of the Storm”は、たくさんの知り合いから強く勧められました。私は「Keep it Real」リリースからのファンなので、最新のシングルやアルバムを聴くことを意識しています。なので、このアルバムは出た時からずっと僕の「聴かなきゃリスト」に入っていました。

I was strongly recommended to listen to ONE OK ROCK’s newest album “Eye of the Storm”. Being a fan of the band since the song「Keep it Real」、I have always made it a point to at least listen to their most recent releases. Therefore, this had been on my “to listen” list for a while. 

一般的に、特に2013年頃までは、楽しんで聞いていた曲もありましたし、特に気に入ったアルバムは何度も繰り返し聞き続けるほどでした。ですが残念ながらこの”Eye of the Storm"のアルバムでは、好きな曲は見つかりませんでした。もしかすると、このアルバムはただ僕の好みと合わなかっただけかもしれませんが、正直少しつまらなかったです。収録された歌詞や音楽は、やる気と独創性に欠けてしまった印象がしました。もしかすると、聞く人にとって聞きやすく、世界的な作品を作るため、このようなことを犠牲にし一般人の好みと合わせた結果が、今回のアルバムのような仕上がりになったのでしょうか。外観が良くなるよう、英語の歌詞を作ろうとしたのかもしれませんが、その代償として彼らのスタイルに傷を残したのではないでしょうか。

Usually, I at least find some songs I like and, especially until 2013, there have been some albums that I enjoy listening to over and over. I’m sorry to say, though, that “Eye of the Storm” will definitely not be one of them. It may be that the album just doesn’t match my tastes, but it seems… bland. For me, the lyrics and music are seemingly lacking in drive and creativity, to the point that it just comes off as pandering. Perhaps these were sacrificed in order to create something more easily digestible and friendly to a world wide audience? The English lyrics, especially, really stood out this time. While this may be good for their exposure, perhaps this also served as a crutch to their style? 

今作は、Takaさんはロックのジャンルに固執するのではなく、音楽制作に専念していると話していたそうです。これからもこういうスタイルですかねぇ。だったら私は結構がっかりしてしまいますが、まあ各バンドが自分のスタイルを変える権利はあるので私は何もできませんし、ONE OK ROCKが今後もこういう風な形でやりたいのであれば、それでもいいでしょう。このような音楽により、ファンの幅もきっと増えたんでしょうし。ロックぽくない音楽を聴く層なんかは特に。名前はONE OK 「ROCK」なんですけどね...まあしょうがないです。

I heard that Taka said that he focused on just creating music this time instead of adhering to a "rock style". Perhaps this is the direction the band wishes to take in the future. If that's so, I am a little disappointed, but obviously, all bands have the right to change their styles as they see fit. At the same time, they must have garnered quite a bit of new fans who are into more mild genres of music. Their name has the word "rock" in it but... oh well.

もっと明るい話題に変えると、このアルバムのおかげで昔のONE OK ROCKの好きな曲をたくさん聴くことになりました。「And I know」、「Liar」、「完全感覚Dreamer」、「NO SCARED」、「Onion!」、「Deeper Deeper」、など。私が好きなONE OK ROCKはもうないかもしれないけど、彼らは新しファンを増えるながら私は前のアルバムを聴いて懐かしい気分を楽しめます。

On a positive note, this album spurred me to go back and listen once again to all the ONE OK ROCK that I truly enjoy. 「And I know」,「Liar」,「完全感覚Dreamer」,「NO SCARED」,「Onion!」,「Deeper Deeper」, etc. The ONE OK ROCK I liked may be gone, but I can at least relish in their past discography as they gain new fans who prefer their current music.
