1971年に発表された曲なので、
2021年で50周年ということになりますね。
クリスマスソングの定番とも言える曲ですが、もともとはベトナム戦争時代の反戦ソングです。この戦争は、アメリカの軍事介入により泥沼化しました。徴兵制の下、数十万人の若者たちが送り込まれ、正義のない絶望的な戦いを強いられます。米軍はナパーム弾を投下するだけでなく、ゲリラが潜むジャングルそのものを消し去るために、枯葉剤を散布しました。枯葉剤はその森を進軍した米兵たちにも後遺症を与え、後にベトナムの多くの子供たちに酷い遺伝的障害を残しました。また、米軍小隊が無抵抗の村人たちを虐殺した事件もありました。
「ハッピークリスマス」はこのような歴史的背景を強く持った曲なので、単なるチキン売り出しのBGMと一緒にして聴き流せない、という意見もあります。
戦争のない地球にするために、次の
世代へ伝えていきたいメッセージ。
戦争は終わる、あなたがそう望むのなら。
