ガラスのオブジェ、ドロメアス（走者）

ギリシャの首都として、またヨーロッパの一都市として何十年も前に、アテネは町

の近代化に取り組み始めました。その一環として作られたのが、ギリシャ人コスタ

ス・ヴァロチョスによるドロメアスでした。ドロメアスは、走者（ランナー）とい

う意味です。

ブラジルのサンパウロで開かれた国際展示会にギリシャ代表としてヴ

ァロチョスは、この8メートルもある、ガラスと鉄で作られた作品で参加しまし

た。この像の当初の題名はクセノス、よそ者という意味でしたが、その姿より後

に、ドロメアス（走者）へと改名されました。

芸術家が心に描いていたもの

ヴァロチョスはドロメアスの制作にあたり、心に描いていたものは、通行人であっ

たと言っています。オモニア広場は常に地方出身者や外国人がアテネに来た時に最

初に向かう場所でした。

彼の作品で興味深いのは常に動いているところを表現しているからです。通行人に

ちょうど会えば、どこから来たのと尋ね、その直後には、いつ帰るのと問うので

す。この作品は、　後に走者と改名され、だんだんとアテネの街を変えてゆき発展

する契機となりました。

オモニア広場での不評からアテネのトレードマークへ

文化大臣とアテネ市長はこの像をオモニア広場へ置くことを決めました。祝典のそ

の日、アテネ市長はみんなは我々がガラスや釘を破壊したと言い、でもその壊れた

ガラスからこの素晴らしいドロメアスが作られたんだと発言しました。しかし、こ

の美しい像はオモニア近隣に住む住人からは好まれず、また地下鉄工事が広場で行

われるようになれば、工事のせいでガラスの彫刻が破壊されていくようになりまし

た。別の場所への移動が必須となり、最終的に選ばれたのは、エバンゲリスモス病

院の地区である、ヒルトンホテルの前となりました。その後、ドロメアスはギリシ

ャ人のみならずアテネを訪れる外国人にとっても興味深く魅力的なアテネのトレー

ドマークとなりました。

ドロメアスのメッセージ

走者の像をよく見ると、この像が生命をもち、走り続け、物語を話しているかの幻

想を与えています。またゴールに到達するところ、まさに目標や夢を達成している

かのような雰囲気が感じられます。この像は、私たちに大切なことを教えてくれて

います。全てのことがうまく行かず、人生がどうにもならないようなときでも、目

的を果たすまで、なんであれ、 自分を高めていくことは決してあきらめないこと。

走り続けよ、進み続けよ、歩き続けよ。決して今いるところに居続けるんじゃない

DROMEAS MODERN STATUE OF ATHENS
A Statue made of glasses, Dromeas (Runner)
Athens as a capital city of Greece and as a European city tried to acquire a modernised image decades ago. One of the works during the 1980s for this modernization was the construction of Dromeas ( it means Runner ) by Greek artist Costas Varotsos.
Varotsos was the sculptor and he participated as the representative of Greek artists at the Biennale sculpture exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil with this work of 8 meter height made of glasses and irons. This statue in the beginning was named Xenos which means stranger in Greek, however later on it was renamed Dromeas which means runner because of its shape.

What the artist had in his mind
Varotsos said about Dromeas that what he had in his mind was the idea of the passerby. Omonia square was always a starting point for the provincials and all the foreigners visitting to Athens. What is interesting in this work is the figure of the man is in constant motion. A stranger you just meet and you ask when you came and right after you ask when you will leave. This statue later converted into Dromeas (Runner). Dromeas(Runner) gradually changed the city of Athens and began to acquire a point of reference.

From unpopularity at Omonia Square to Athens' trademark
The minister of culture and the mayor of Athens decided to display it in Omonia Square. The day of the ceremony, the Mayor of Athens said that everyone told us that we destroyed glasses and nails but we made beautiful Dromeas (Runner) with the broken glasses.
However this beautiful statue started having problems when it was displayed in Omonia Square. The local people in the neighbourhood didn’t like it. In addition to that this modern sculpture started being collapsed due to the metro construction going on in that square. Dromeas(Runner) necessarily had to be moved to another location and finally an appropriate place was set for it, which was across Hilton Hotel in the neighbourhood of Evangelismos hospital.
Later on Dromeas(Runner) turned out to be the one of the trademarks of Athens attracted interest and attention not only by Greeks but also by the foreign visitors.

Message from Dromeas
Observing Dromeas(Runner) you see that it is alive, moving and creating the illusion that speaks its story. Its attitude is like a runner reaching the finishing line and succeeding in his goal and dreams. The unique thing about Dromeas (Runner) is that it teaches us something very fantastic. Even if everything around us is stuck and our life seems to be no way out, we should never ever give up on our self-improvement until we finish or reach our goal no matter how. (Written by George)
