スタディウ通りの失敗に終わった改名

アテネの中心シンタグマ広場からオモニア広場を走る通りをスタディウ通りといい、古代アテネから存在した歴史ある通りです。スタディウ通りは市民の生活の中心の場であった古代アゴラと古代にお墓があったケラミコスと、現在はカリマルマロ（上質の大理石の意味）の愛称で親しまれている古代競技場をつなぐ大切な道でした。長い歴史をもつこの通りですが、近代になってチャーチル通りと改名が行われました。当時のギリシャ政府が、第二次大戦終息と、ナチス軍からの解放に尽力したイギリスのチャーチル首相に敬意を表したかったからです。しかし人々はこの改名を受け入れることはなく、スタディウ通りと呼び続けました。

アカデミア通りとパネピスティミウ通りの改名

またスタディウ通りと平行して二つの通りがあります。一つはアカデミア通り、もう一つは大学通りです。アカデミアは有名な哲学者プラトンが作った学園の名前です。パネピスティミウは大学という意味で、この通りにはネオクラシック様式の美しいアテネ大学やアカデミーの建造物があります。これら二つの通りも改名が行われました。アカデミア通りは世界恐慌と第二次世界大戦時のアメリカの大統領、ルーズベルトの名前がつけられました。２０世紀初頭の世界政治の中心人物です。大学通りは近代ギリシャの父であるベニゼロス通りへと変えられました。しかしスタディウ通りと同様にこれらの名前はアテネの人々には歓迎されませんでした。以前から慣れ親しんだ、自分たちのルーツである古代ギリシャにちなんだ名称を好んだためです。

競技場（スタジアム）の名前の由来

スタディウ通りのスタディウという言葉は現代ギリシャ語に残っており競技場を意味します。英語ではスタジアム（Stadium）です。ギリシャで最も古い競技大会はオリンピアで、当初は短距離走のみの競技が行われていました。競技で走る距離の長さの単位は1スタディオンと決められ、192,27メートルとされました。この長さはヘレクレスの足のサイズを600倍にしたものと伝えられています。ギリシャ神話のある言い伝えによると、ヘラクレスがギリシャで最初に競技会を開催したとも言われているいるので、彼の足の大きさを基準として競技場が作られたのかもしれません。そしてこの長さの基準がそのまま競技場という意味で使われるようになり、現在でも同じ意味で使われています。（written by George and Yuki)

Stadiou Street in Athens and the origin of the word stadiumUnsuccessful rename of Stadiou Street                                            The stadiou street which runs from Syntagma Square in the center of Athens to Omonia Square is a very old street and existed from ancient Athens. Studiou Street is an important link between the Ancient Agora, centre of the ancient Athenians life and Keramikos, the ancient tomb, and the ancient stadium where the ancient festival took place in Athens. Now we call this stadium Kallimarmaro which means good marble as a nickname. This street has a long history but in modern times it was renamed Churchill Street by the Greek government because Greece as a country wanted to honour British Prime Minister Churchill, who helped to end World War II and the liberation from the German occupation. However the Greek didn't accept this renaming. They kept on calling Stadiou.

Rename of Acadimia Street and Panepistimiou Street                               There are also other two streets parallel to Studiou Street. One is Academia Street and the other is Panepistimiou Street. Academia is the name of famous philosopher Platon’s school, and Panepistimiou means university. Panepistimiou Street has the beautiful neo classical Athens University and Academy. These two streets renamed as well. Academia Street was changed into Roosevelt Street. Roosevelt was the American President during the Great Depression and World War II. He was the most powerful leader of the world in the early 20th century. Panepistimiou Street was renamed to Venizelos Street. Venizelos was the prime minister of Greece about 100 years ago and he is regarded as the father of modern Greece. However these two names were not welcomed by the Greeks and renaming these streets became a failure. So the name remained as it was because the Greeks prefer the name associated with their roots of their own history.

Where comes the meaning of the word stadium
The word studiou of Stadiou Street remains in modern Greek and it means stadium. The oldest game in Greece was started in Olympia, which initially had only foot races. The unit of length of distance run in the game was decided to be one stadion, which was 192,27 meters. This length is said to be 600 times more than the size of Hercules' feet. According to the mythology, Heracles was the person to create the game in Greece, so the stadium was built based on the size of his feet. Therefore this standard of length became the meaning of the place which the game took place and it is still used in the same meaning today.  (Written by George and Yuki)
