ギリシャの首都アテネは人口の約半分が居住するギリシャ最大の都市です。ギリシャ観光の拠点として、またヨーロッパの古都としてたくさんの旅行者を魅了し続けています。日本語ではアテネ、英語ではアセンズ、ギリシャ語でなアスィナと言われるこの町の名前の由来をご紹介します。

かつてはケクロピアと呼ばれていた街

ギリシャ神話ではこの町はケクロピアと呼ばれていました。上半身が人間、下半身が蛇の姿を持つケクロパスという王様がこの街を支配していました。ケクロパスの治める街ということでケクロピアなんですね。ある日、ケクロパスのもとに女神アテナと海の神様ポセイドンがやってきます。そしてこの街の守護神になりたいといいだし、ケクロパスにどちらが守護神にふさわしいか決めてくれと言うのです。ケクロパスは困りました。どちらかを選ぶということは、どちらかを選ばないということ。選ばれなかった神様が自分を逆恨みして災いを被るのは絶対に嫌だということで、責任逃れからどちらがふさわしいかは街の住民に決めてもらいましょうと提案したのです。住民が決めるにあたって何か基準になるものが必要だということから、それぞれの神様に、住民のためになる贈り物をしてくださいと伝えました。

守護神争いと女神アテナの贈り物

贈り物を街の住民に披露する舞台となったのが、アクロポリスの丘です。アテナ神とポセイドン神は住民が見守る中、贈り物を披露します。最初はアテナ神。アテナ神は持っている杖を地面にエイっと突き刺しました。すると突き刺した穴からニョキニョキとオリーブの木が伸びてき、枝をつけ、葉をつけ、大きなオリーブの実で木は一杯になりました。住民は感嘆の声をあげます。オリーブの樹は夏の強い日差しから守ってくれる。また油として食することもでき、寒い冬には火を灯し、暖をとることができると住民は言いました。

海の神様ポセイドンの贈り物

次はポセイドン神の番です。住民が見守る中、シンボルの三叉の鉾を地面に力強く突き刺しました。すると突き刺した地面の割れ目から海水が吹き出し、その海水は川となり、川は海へと流れ出ました。人々は目の前で起こっていることに驚きを隠すことができません。そして口々に海につながる川を持つことは、交易や戦時にとって有利になるぞといいあいました。

住民の決断とアテネの名の由来

住民は集まり、いろんな意見を言い合い、どちらもありがたい贈り物だと考えましたが、どちらか選ぶとなればアテナ神のオリーブの樹がもっともありがたいということでアテナ神が街の守護神に選ばれました。それ以来、この街の名前はキクロピアではなく、アテナ神の名前、アテナと言われるようになりました。（アテナ神もギリシャ語ではアスィナと言います。）それ以来、何千年にもわたってこの街に人が住み続け、アテナと呼ばれつづけ、現在に至っています。

最後に

アクロポリスの丘には素晴らしいパルテノン神殿、プロピレア、エレクティオンと見どころ満載の建造物が、これでもかと言うくらい見るものに迫ってき、圧倒されるほどの美しさです。その美しさとともに、アクロポリスの丘が守護神争いの舞台であったんだなと感じながら丘を歩くとギリシャ神話が本当にあったお話のように思えてくるのです。エレクティオンの前のオリーブの樹のある場所が女神アテナが杖を突き刺したところと言われてます。ポセイドンによって海水が湧き出た聖なる場にはいつも太陽の光が射すようにということでエレクティオンの北側の天井の一つが開けられたままです。ギリシャ神話は架空の話でありギリシャの歴史の一部でもあります。ギリシャ神話を実際のお話とみなすことで、より一層古代の遺跡が自分に近くなるような気がするのです。(Written by Yuki)

Goddess Athena and Poseidon’s battle set in Acropolis and the origin of the name Athens
Athens, the capital city of Greece, is the largest city in Greece where half of the population lives. Athens is the base city of sightseeings in Greece and the ancient city of Europe which attracts many tourists from all over the world. Today I would like to introduce where the city name, Athens, comes from.
A town that was once called Kikuropia
In Greek mythology, Athens was called Kikropia. A king named Kikuropas, whose upper body is human and whose lower body is a snake. He dominated this city and Kikuropia means a city governed by Kikuropas. One day, the goddess Athena and the god of sea Poseidon went to see Kikuropas. They wanted to be the tutelary deity of this city, and asked Kikuropas to choose which one is the best for the guardian. Kikuropas was in trouble because he thought that choosing one means not choosing the other and the other one not chosen might hate him and give some revenge for his decision. So he suggested that people in the city should decide in order to avoid his responsibility. He told each god to present a gift for the sake of the residents because they need something criteria to compare them as the best guardians.
Guardian Conflict and Gift of Goddess Athena
The Acropolis Hill was the place of the battle for two gods presenting their gifts. At first Goddess Athena stabbed her cane into the ground. Then an olive tree came out of the hole and grew and had branches and leaves and finally the tree was filled with big olive fruits. People screamed with admiration. They thought olive trees can protect them from the sunlight on hot summer days and also that olives can be eaten and make them warm in the cold winter.
Gift of Poseidon
Here came the turn of the god Poseidon. He stabbed his symbol, trident into the ground. Then, seawater spouted from the crack of the ground and the water formed the river and flowed into the sea. People were surprised with what was happening in front of them. They thought having a river in the city would be a huge advantage when it comes to trading and warfare.
The result and the origin of the name of Athens
People in Athens gathered and discussed. They thought that both gifts were precious and useful for the city but they chose Athena as guardian deity because of her olive tree. Since then, the name of the city has been called Athena, the name of the goddess Athena and this name is kept until today.
At the end
The Acropolis Hill is overwhelmingly beautiful with its magnificent Parthenon, Propylaea, Erechtheion and other highlights. Walking through the hills and feeling that the Acropolis hill was the place where the battle of two gods took place makes us think that Greek mythology is a true story. There is the olive tree in front of Election and it is told where Athen stabbed her cane.One part of the ceiling of Election is missing and it is open. It is believed under the missing ceiling point is where the seawater was splashed. It was regarded as a sacred place and the place must have sunlights. That is why one ceiling part is open.
