自身が歯科治療を受けたくて歯科医院を探していたところ
NHSのDental ClinicはどこもNew Patientの受入をしておらず、電話での問い合わせ時点で門前払い。
プライベート歯科医院が地域にたくさんあり、値段もそれぞれのため、みんなはどうしているのか気になった。
１．NHSでは医療は無料なのに対して，歯科治療ではNHSでもなんと8割が患者負担（ただし，低所得者，小児，妊婦を除く）．たとえ急に歯が痛くなってもNHSでは緊急には診てもらえない（＊下記注2参照）．
２．海外駐在員保険など，在留邦人用の保険でも歯科診療の費用はカバーされない
したがって，日本にいる間に歯はすべて治しておくというのが鉄則である．そんなこと言われたってもう間に合わないという人のために，以下，英国の歯科診療について述べる．
１．歯科診療は民間保険で
NHSでも患者負担が8割というのでは，とてもじゃないけどNHSだけでは歯医者にかかれない．だから患者側は民間保険（プライベート）に加入することで自衛する．標準的なメニューの保険料でも月々十数ポンドと決して安くはないが，歯のリスクが多い人は加入すれば元がとれる．プライベート歯科保険での大手はDenplan，Bupa．一方，歯が丈夫（あるいは丈夫でなくても行きたくない）人はプライベートには加入しないという選択をすることになる．
２．治療内容の選択
またNHSでは治療内容（使用する材料や治療法の選択）の制限がきついので，いきおい，治療の結果も不満足になりやすい．プライベートの場合も制限なしというわけではないが，治療開始前に患者の診察をして，必要な治療の見積もりを出し，その見積もりをもとに患者と保険会社の間の話し合いで治療内容，治療費を決めるので，歯科医師と患者の了解のもとで，（金はかかるが）より適切な治療が行われるようになっている．

金額や治療の質に関わらず、NHSの歯科医師数がそもそも足りていないことを知ると、自身が経験したことも納得がいく。
Covid-19のパンデミックによる影響もあったようだ。
The number of people waiting for NHS hospital treatment in the UK has hit a record high of 5.61 million, as the NHS struggles to care for the growing backlog of appointments caused by the pandemic.
The NHS dental industry was hit hard during covid, from the initial lockdown in March 2020 with uncertainty and cancellations, to the present day, with practices still seeing the impacts of the pandemic and long appointment wait times.
Analysis of the NHS GP Patient Survey found that one in four patients, roughly 1.03 million people in the UK, are not on the books of an NHS dentist and have been unable to get an appointment in the past year due to the pandemic.
With people now told to wait until 2024 for an NHS dentist appointment. Whilst others are being removed from their practice lists for not making appointments sooner, leaving patients feeling frustrated and uncared for.
