Cappadox Returns!

トルコが誇る世界遺産、カッパドキアの奇岩風景を舞台にした総合アートフェスティバル「Cappadox（カッパドックス）」が2024年５月下旬に帰ってくる！

「Cappadox」は初夏のカッパドキアの野外でトルコ内外のスピリチャルな音楽アーティストのライブを中心に、モダンアートの展覧会、薪火を使ったファインダイニングや地産ワインのワークショップ、ネイチャーウォーク、ヨガや瞑想ワークショップなどを詰め込んだ現代トルコならではのフェス。

2015年から2018年まで４年連続で開催され、国内外からの参加者に「奇跡のフェス」と評されながらも、一旦終了してしまっていた。

それが今年2024年に満を持して再開することになった！

再開を祝して、2016年から３年連続で「Cappadox」を取材した僕、サラームが当時書いた原稿を元にして「note」のマガジンを作ろう！

第２回目の記事は「カッパドキア体験」。Cappadox以外で、観光地カッパドキアの楽しみ方をサクっとチェックしたい方向け。

カッパドキア体験

Cappadoxだけがカッパドキアではない。カッパドキア観光の目玉はやはり世界遺産にもなっている奇岩遺跡巡り。ギョレメ野外博物館やカイマクルの地下都市などを周辺の魅力ある町とともに、半日や一日かけて回るガイド付き観光ツアーは広い範囲に散らばるカッパドキアの名所を効率的に観ることが出来るのでオススメだ。僕は1990年から現在までに奇岩ツアーに三回参加しているが、毎回訪れる場所も季節も異なるので、毎回何かしらの発見がある。

岩を彫り抜いた部屋の洞窟ホテルに滞在するのもカッパドキアならではの楽しみだ。ギョレメやウチヒサルには近年になって、新たに岸壁を掘って建てられた洞窟ホテルが激増した。どの宿も部屋の快適さに加えて、自家製のジャムや地元の食材をたっぷり使った朝食をも競っている。さらに、高級な宿にはプライベート・ハマム（蒸し風呂）が併設されている。外出に疲れたら、ハマムでトルコ式の垢すりや全身マッサージを受けるのも悪くない。ただし、日本式やタイ式の至れり尽くせりなマッサージやスパを期待するのは止めておこう。

Horse & Balloon Ride

カッパドキア観光を一通りすませた方に、次におすすめしたいのは乗馬ツアーと夜明けの熱気球ツアーだ。

乗馬ツアーは奇岩の立ち並ぶギョレメ周辺の少々険しい山道をよく調教された馬に乗って回る数時間から数日のツアー。全くの初心者だった僕は、最初のうち馬との意思の疎通が上手く行かず、馬は僕の思い通りには進んでくれなかった。しかし、馬の背に揺られながら、次々と目の前に現れる奇岩を無心で眺めているうち、いつの間にか馬の心と僕の心がシンクロしているような不思議な気分が訪れ、心が嘘のように静かになった。たった２時間の乗馬ツアーだったが、奇妙なメディテーション効果まで味わえた。

もう一つは午前4時集合の熱気球ツアー。午前６時前に気球に乗り込み、フワっと空中に浮かび上がると、ちょうど東の地平線から太陽が昇ってくるのを眺められる。標高1850mの高さでは、操縦士が時折り吹かす「ズバー」っというバーナーの音と、地上との無線、ツアー客が話すトルコ語以外は無音である。周囲360度に広がる奇岩風景と約100機の熱気球、その風景には圧倒される。

Cappadox Returns!

Cappadox, the comprehensive art festival set against the backdrop of Cappadocia's unique rock landscapes, a pride of Turkey and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is coming back in late May 2024!

Cappadox is a festival unique to modern Turkey, cramming in 3 or 4 days of live performances by spiritual music artists from both Turkey and abroad, modern art exhibitions, fine dining using firewood, local wine workshops, nature walks, yoga, and meditation workshops in the outdoor settings of Cappadocia in early summer.

Held consecutively from 2015 to 2018, it was once concluded despite being praised as a "miraculous festival" by participants from both home and abroad. Now, it's set for a grand return in 2024!

To celebrate the relaunch, I, who covered "Cappadox" for three consecutive years from 2016, am planning to create a "note" magazine based on my original manuscripts from those times!

Cappadocia Experiences

Cappadox is not the only thing in Cappadocia. The main attraction of Cappadocia tourism is undoubtedly the tour of the strange rock ruins, a World Heritage site. Half-day and full-day guided tours, covering Göreme Open Air Museum, Kaymakli Underground City, and other charming towns around, are recommended as they efficiently cover the widespread attractions of Cappadocia. I've participated in the strange rocks tour three times from 1990 to the present, and each time, the places and seasons are different, so there's always something new to discover.

Staying in a cave hotel carved out of rock is another unique enjoyment in Cappadocia. In recent years, new cave hotels have been excavated and built in Göreme and Uchisar. Each accommodation competes not only in room comfort but also in offering breakfast loaded with homemade jams and local ingredients. Moreover, luxury accommodations include a private hammam (steam bath). It's not bad to receive a Turkish-style scrub and full-body massage in the hammam after getting tired from going out. However, it's best not to expect the meticulous massage and spa services like those in Japan or Thailand.

Horse & Balloon Ride

For those who have finished general Cappadocia tourism, I next recommend horse riding tours and dawn hot air balloon tours.

Horse riding tours are several hours to several days long tours that navigate through the slightly rugged mountain paths surrounded by strange rocks near Göreme on well-trained horses. As a complete beginner, I initially struggled to communicate with the horse, and it didn't proceed as I wished. However, as I was swayed on the horse's back, gazing mindlessly at the strange rocks appearing one after another, I felt a strange sense that my heart was synchronizing with the horse's heart, and my mind became unexpectedly calm. Although it was just a two-hour horse riding tour, I even experienced a peculiar meditative effect.

Another recommendation is the hot air balloon tour with a 4 am gathering. Boarding the balloon before 6 am, you float gently into the air, just in time to watch the sun rise from the eastern horizon. At an altitude of 1850m, apart from the occasional "whoosh" of the burner, radio communication with the ground, and the Turkish conversations of tourists, it's silent. The 360-degree view of the strange rock landscape and about 100 hot air balloons is overwhelming.
