静岡市葵区大工町の由来について紹介します。大工町は駿府城から南へ1.2キロほどの道のりです。元が町人地の場合、一般的に「町」は「ちょう」と読みます。徳川家康公は町人の居住区を職業別に分けて都市を作り上げたというその話にピッタリな地名です。

Daiku-cho district 　

大工町　

‘Daiku’ literally means ‘carpenter’ in Japanese.

「だいく」とは日本語で大工のことを意味します。

At the beginning of the Edo period, carpenters lived in this district.

江戸時代初期、大工たちがこの地区に住んでいました。

In the Edo period, fire was extinguished not by dousing water but by knocking down houses yet to catch fire.

江戸時代　火災は水をかけて消すのではなく、まだ燃えていない家を破壊することで鎮火させていました。

The demand for carpenters was bigger than in modern times.

大工の需要は現代より大きかったのです。

Did you know carpenters in the Edo period earned higher wages than any other artisans?

江戸時代には　大工がどの職人たちより稼ぎが良かったということをご存知ですか？

However, they were required to undergo training and apprenticeship for many years to be full-fledged artisans.

しかし　一人前の大工になるには、長い修行と奉公が必要でした。

There is an interesting legend about Daiku-cho.

大工町について、興味深い伝説があります。

There is a temple named Fukusenji temple in Daiku-cho district.

大工町に福泉寺というお寺があります。

The temple has a grave where Bikosai was supposedly buried.

そのお寺には備考斎が葬られていると思われるお墓があります。

It is believed that Bikosai, or Ukita Kokichi ,was the first Japanese to fly.

備考斎またの名で浮田幸吉は初めて飛行した日本人と信じられています。

He was born in Bizen, now Okayama prefecture.

彼は備前、現在の岡山県に生まれました。

He was interested in how birds fly, and researched his own method for flying like a bird.

彼は鳥がどうやって飛ぶか興味があり、鳥のように飛ぶ方法を研究しました。

He experimented with gliders, but was banished from his hometown for disturbing people.

彼はグライダーの実験をしましたが、人々を混乱させた罪で所払いをさせられました。

He settled in Sumpu and established a successful fabric business in Egawa-cho district.

彼は駿府に落ち着き、江川町で繊維の商いを始め、成功させました。

At that time, he was reputable for making false teeth with bamboo and oakwood.

そのころ、備考斎は竹や樫の木で義歯を作り、高い評判を得ました。

In the past, some old residents of Shizuoka still called dentists ’binkosai’.

昔、お年寄りの中には歯医者さんのことを「ビンコーサイ」と言った人もいました。

※　備考斎は駿府で亡くなったという説と、磐田の見附で亡くなったという説があり、謎に包まれています。福泉寺には備考斎と思われるお墓がありました。
