さて宇津ノ谷地区に行くとこれを必ず見ますよ。小さいのでよく注意してみてくださいね。

Utsunoya Mountain Pass Part3
宇津ノ谷峠　パート３

Visitors can recognize a small pearl-like item hanging above the sliding doors.
宇津ノ谷に来た人は引き戸の上に真珠のような小さいものがあるのに気がつきます。

It is an amulet called 'Todango', which literally means 'ten dumplings'.
それは「十団子（とおだんご）」と呼ばれ、文字通り「十の団子」を意味します。

It originated from a local folklore about an ogre eating people who traverse the Utsunoya Pass.
それは宇津ノ谷峠を通る人々を食べてしまう鬼についての民話に由来しています

Once upon a time, there was an ogre that ate people in the Utsunoya mountain pass.
昔々、宇津ノ谷峠に人を食べる鬼がいた。

The locals prayed to a local Jizo Bodhisattva that the ogre would be defeated.
地元の衆はお地蔵様に鬼を退治して下せえと祈った。

Jizo Bodhisattva is a familiar Buddha statue for the Japanese.
地蔵とは日本人になじみの仏像のこと。

The statues can still be seen even now to protect children, travelers, and pregnant women along local streets and in local Buddhist temples.
今でも地蔵は、子ども、旅人、妊婦さんを守ってくれるとして道沿いや地域の寺院で見られます。

Because of the rigorous praying of the locals, one Jizo Bodhisattva statue transformed into a Buddhist priest.
宇津ノ谷の人々が熱心に祈るものだから、あるお地蔵様が姿を変えて、和尚様になった。

He approached the ogre and instigated him to transform into a smaller ogre as much as possible, using his power.
和尚様は鬼に近づいて、力を使ってできるだけ小さくなれるかとそそのかした。

When the ogre became a small ball, the priest hit it with his stick.
鬼が小さな球になった時、和尚様は自分の杖でその球を叩いた。

The ball was divided into ten pieces, and the priest immediately ate all of them.
その球が10個の破片に砕けると、和尚様はそれを全部すぐに食べてしまった。

As a result, the amulet was created based on this folklore.
そうして、そのお守りがこの民話に基づいて作られた

The amulets are made in the Keiryuji Temple, which is located in the center of the Utsunoya area.
そのお守りは宇津ノ谷地区の中心にある慶龍寺で作られます。

They are sold at the temple’s festival every 23rd and 24th of August.
8月23日と24日の寺のお祭りで売られます。

This amulet is still hung above an entrance door, getting along with the local tradition.
このお守りは今なお玄関の扉の上に掛けられ、伝統の民話を踏襲しています。
