静岡のミカンのことを調べているうちに同じ柑橘類のタチバナのことも気になってきました。

There are many citrus fruits in Japan , however only two varieties are native to Japan.

日本にはたくさんの柑橘類があります。しかし日本原産であるのは2種類しかありません。

One is shequasar in Okinawa (Okinawa lime) and the other is tachibana orange.

一つは沖縄のシークワーサー、そしてもう一つがタチバナです。

In Japan, the tachibana orange has been appreciated because it's evergreen since the ancient period.

日本ではタチバナは古来より、常緑であるため大事に考えられていました。

This plant was presumably depicted in Nihon Shoki, or the Chronicles of Japan, as miraculous medicine for perpetual youth and long life.

この植物は日本書紀に不老長寿の霊薬として描かれています。

Tachibana trees can be found on 500-yen coins.

タチバナの木は500円硬貨にも見られます。

Looking closely at it, there are two plants on both sides of the 500 number.

よく見てみると、500の数の両脇に木があります。

This auspicious plant can also be seen in Hina Dolls set, which is displayed for daughters’ happiness in March.

このおめでたい植物は、3月に娘の幸せを祈り飾られるひな人形にも見られます。

In Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, there is a tachibana tree in the left side of the main building of the Kambe and Asama shrines.

静岡浅間神社には浅間・神部神社大拝殿の左側にタチバナの木があります。

Tachibana and cherry blossom trees go hand in hand.

タチバナと桜の木はふたつでワンセットなのです。

These two trees are indicators of spring.

二本の木は春の訪れを知らせてくれます。

The cherry blossom tree represents ‘Konohana-sakuya-hime’ (Princess of Konohana-sakuya), who is the main goddess of the Asama shrine, which is dedicated to Mt. Fuji.

桜の木は富士山を祀る浅間神社の主要な女神様である「コノハナサクヤヒメ」を象徴しています。

On the other hand, the tachinaba tree represents ‘Iwanaga-hime’ (Princess of Iwanaga), who is the big sister of Konohana-sakuya-hime.

一方、タチバナの木は　コノハナサクヤヒメのお姉さんである「イワナガヒメ」を象徴しています。

Tachinaba trees grow only in warm regions, and the northern limit of natural growth in Japan is Heda, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

タチバナの木は暖かい地方でしか育ちません。そして日本で自然に育つ北限は静岡県沼津市の戸田なのです。

Tachibana fruit from Heda is now being promoted as a new local marmalade product.

戸田でとれるタチバナの実は今、新しい地元のマーマレードとして売り出し中です。

The tachibana tree planted in Shizuoka Sengen Shrine was donated by Heda, Numazu City.

静岡浅間神社に植えられているタチバナの木は沼津市の戸田から寄付されたものです。
