映画『インファナル・アフェア Ⅱ無間序曲』チラシの宣伝文です。一国二制度が一国一制度になり、香港の政治が中国に支配されるようになった今では、このような優れた香港映画は、もう作られることはないかもしれません。そうであれば残念なことです。香港の市民にとって、この宣伝文は、今となっては、映画の中のストーリーとは、別の意味で真実になったのかもしれません。
「監督っていうのはな、選手もスタッフもその家族も、全員が乗っている船を目指す港に到着させなけりゃならないんだ。誰か一人のために、その船を沈めるわけにはいかないんだ。」
この『嫌われた監督 落合博満は中日をどう変えたのか』という本は読んでいる途中ですが、心につき刺さる表現が随所にあります。プロ野球日本シリーズでの完全試合達成という偉業と、継投によるチームの優勝のどちらを優先するかという究極の選択を求められたとき、落合監督がとったのは後者でした。それは、過去の苦い経験があったからだと、彼は言います。
「俺はどうしても、いつもと同じように戦いたいとか、ずっと働いてきた選手を使いたいとか、そういう考えが捨てきれなかったんだ」「でもな、負けてわかったよ。それまでどれだけ尽くしてきた選手でも、ある意味で切り捨てる非情さが必要だったんだ」
彼も元々は、多くの人がそうであるように、人の気持ちを汲みたかったのです。しかし彼は試合に勝つために思い切って情を捨てました。ただし、その選択が失敗すれば、その責任は監督がとることになります。結局、継投が成功してチームは優勝するのですが、この本の著者はこう書きます。
一歩ドームを出れば、無数の批難が待っているだろう。落合の手に残されたのは、ただ勝ったという事実だけだった。
この本はノンフィクションですが、この描写は甘いハードボイルド小説を思わせます。
将来、プロ野球の日本シリーズでこのような状況は、まず起きないでしょうが、もし再現したら、その時の監督はどちらを選択するでしょうか。
とはいうものの、野球はたかがゲームです。平和だからこそ、監督は自分で判断できるし、野球を見ている人たちも監督の采配を批評したり批判したりできます。生きるためにすべてを、あるいは何かを捨てないといけない香港の状況の過酷さとは比べようもありません。
『インファナル・アフェア』第１作で、忘れがたいウォン警視を演じた、アンソニー・ウォンさんは、香港の民主化を支持したため、仕事も収入も失ったそうです。
一方、習近平氏は、「誰か一人のために、その船を沈めるわけにはいかないんだ。」と思って、権力を行使しているのかもしれません。彼は思い通りにやり通せるのでしょうか。

I am in the middle of reading this book, "The Hated Manager: How Hiromichi Ochiai Changed the Chunichi Baseball Team," and there are many expressions that stick in my mind. When he was asked to make the ultimate choice between achieving a perfect game in the Nippon Series and winning the championship by pitching in succession, Ochiai chose the latter. According to him, it was because of his past bitter experience.
I couldn't get rid of the idea that I wanted to fight the same way I always have, or that I wanted to use the players who had worked so hard. But after we lost the last Japan Series, I realized that I needed to be ruthless in cutting down players when necessary, no matter how much they had done for me up to that point.
He originally wanted to be compassionate, as many of us are. But he boldly abandoned his feelings in order to win the game. However, if that choice fails, the responsibility will be taken by the supervisor. In the end, the reliever was successful and the team won, but the author of this book writes:
Once he stepped out of the dome, countless criticisms would be waiting for him. All that was left in Ochiai's hands was the fact that he had won.
This book is non-fiction, but the description reminds me of a sweet hard-boiled novel.
It is unlikely that a situation like this will happen in the future in the Japan Series of professional baseball, but if it does, which will the manager choose?
Having said that, baseball is only a game. Because it is peaceful, the manager can make his own decisions, and people watching the game can critique and criticize the manager's decisions. There is no comparison to the harshness of the situation in Hong Kong, where people have to give up everything or anything in order to survive.
Anthony Wong, who played the unforgettable Inspector Wong in the first Infernal Affairs film, lost his job and income because he supported democracy in Hong Kong.
On the other hand, Mr. Xi Jinping may be exercising his power thinking, "I can't sink the ship for one person." Can he do what he wants?
