Covid禍の回復途上にあって、穏やかにバンドの結束と自身のコンディションを確かめながら1970sな音像を追求した傑作『Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You』から一年半。

久しぶりにNYから届けられた4ピース・バンドBig Thiefの新曲『Vampire Empire』は、ついにフィジカルとメンタルの絶好調を取り戻したかのような爆発的なロック・ナンバーです。

4度進行の2コードを繰り返すシンプル極まりない構成に演奏のダイナミクスで彩りを与える手腕は彼ら最大の強みであり、その演出に促されながら地声と裏声、クライマックスで放たれるシャウトなどのテクニックを自在に操りストーリーを語り切るエイドリアン・レンカーの巧みさと詩作能力は健在どころかさらに研ぎ澄まされています。

パートナーとのトキシックな共依存関係にドラッグ中毒を絡め、ムルナウの傑作『吸血鬼ノスフェラトゥ』(1922)のイメージをふんだんに効かせながら暗を描写する前半、カタルシスへの光明を垣間見せる中盤を経て、しかしエイドリアンの叫びとディストーション・ギターでパラノイアしていく後半の3部構成による3分12秒は可能性と不可能性の両面に引き裂かれつつ、そのアートとしての美しさで仄かな希望をリスナーの胸に残します。

「短剣」や「花」といった性のメタファーが印象的で、その辺りもCovid明けの人肌のコミュニケーションに飢えた私たちの心を潤してくれるかのよう。

秋にリリースされるEP、その先にあるはずの新作アルバムはどのような作品になるのか、期待が高まります。
