数年前に開墾したお寺の畑には、おかげさまでたくさんの生き物がやってくるようになりました。

様々なチョウ、なんの幼虫かわからない毛虫もたくさんですし、バッタやコオロギ、アブラムシ。ダンゴムシやハサミムシ、土の中にはミミズも増えて、土づくりを手伝ってくれています。

様々な生き物がいると、それを捕食する生き物もまたやってきます。

今年は、バッタの勢いが凄かった。

野菜の種をまいて芽吹いたと思えば、片っ端から全部バッタに食べられてしまうということが何度もありました。

そのバッタから畑を守ってくれていたのがカマキリです。

チョウの幼虫も葉物の野菜をどんどん食べてしまうのですが、そのチョウの天敵もまたカマキリ。

いわば畑の番人のような仕事をしてくれていました。

京都はここ最近一気に寒さが増して、秋をすっ飛ばして冬になってしまったような気温です。

いつものように畑を通ると一匹のカマキリを発見しました。

何か様子がおかしいので見てみると、ヨタヨタとバランスを崩しながら土の上を歩いています。

今にも力尽きそうなので、おそらくこのカマキリはあと数日で一生を終え、土に還っていくのだなと思いました。

このカマキリが子孫を残したかどうかは分かりませんが、カマキリも、バッタもチョウも、次の世代が卵の状態で冬を越し、また次の春が来て暖かくなれば、今年と同じやり取りが始まるのでしょう。

冬になって人間の目には目立たなくなりますが、卵という形で生き続けているわけです。

そう考えると、冬を終わりととらえるか、始まりととらえるか、分からなくなってきます。

生と死についても同じようなことなのかなと、カマキリを見て思います。

人間以外の生き物から学ぶ、畑は学校のようです。

Learning from the Mantis

Thanks to the temple's efforts, many creatures have come to visit the temple's fields, which were cultivated several years ago.

We have a variety of butterflies, caterpillars whose larvae we do not know, grasshoppers, crickets, aphids, sowbugs, scorpion beetles and earthworms, which help to build the soil.

With a variety of creatures come also creatures that prey on them.

This year, the grasshoppers were very active.

Many times we planted vegetable seeds and just as we thought they were sprouting, they were all eaten by grasshoppers from one side to the other.

The mantis protected the fields from the grasshoppers.

Butterfly larvae also eat leafy vegetables, but the natural enemy of the butterflies is also the praying mantis.

It has become colder and colder in Kyoto recently, and the temperature seems to have skipped autumn and turned into winter.

As I passed by the field as usual, I spotted a praying mantis.

Something was wrong with it, so I looked at it and saw that it was walking on the soil, losing its balance.

It looked as if it was about to run out of energy, so I thought that this praying mantis would probably finish its life in a few days and return to the soil.

I do not know whether this praying mantis has left any descendants, but I am sure that the next generation of mantis, grasshoppers, and butterflies will pass through the winter as eggs, and when the next spring comes and the weather warms up, they will begin the same exchange that took place this year.

They are no longer visible to the human eye in the winter, but they continue to live on in the form of eggs.

When I think about it, I am not sure whether to regard winter as the end or the beginning.

Looking at the praying mantis, I wonder if the same thing applies to life and death.

Learning from non-human creatures, the field is like a school.
