Overview of Translation Industry in Japan (Trade Survey)

A quick report on the webinar on 9 June 2021 by the JTF (Japanese Translation Federation) on their survey of the translation and interpreting industry in Japan conducted in autumn of last year:

The survey comes in two parts: LSPs and translators. The special emphasis this time lies on the impact of COVID-19 and MT use in the trade.

Impact from COVID-19: Both LSPs and translators were affected. Those working for the IT industry suffered less in contrast to those working for the manufacturing industry. The fact that large LSPs were affected less from the pandemic presumably comes from their wider coverage of fields. With a larger portfolio, it is more likely to have more winners in your customer base.

MT: 30% of LSPs are using MT and another 30% are considering to use it. Almost all large LSPs are using MT. In terms of volume, MT is definitely on the march. As much as 30% of (full-time and freelance) translators are already providing PE services.

What I really want to know is the use of MI in my source clients. The survey tells us that 36% of in-house translators are using MT which gave me some clue in this regard.
