Hello everyone, welcome to today’s episode of my podcast!
This podcast is about my daily life in Brisbane, Australia as a native Japanese-speaking learner of English.
This podcast is bilingual, using both English and Japanese.

いつも聞いてくださっている方はお気づきかもしれませんが、
英語→日本語から日本語→英語と話す順番を変えました。
Regular listeners may notice that the order of English and Japanese has been swapped.

ハッ！日本語→英語の方が、
・この日本語のフレーズ　英語でなんて言うんだろう？
・（英語を聞いていただいて）
・ほー。こういうふうにも言えるのかぁ
と考えるのに、いいのではないかしら？と突然、閃きまして（大抵いつも思いつき）　
This is because I suddenly realised that the order might be helpful for you to consider how to translate my Japanese phrases into English.

ということで、実験として、何回か日本語→英語の順でエピソードを録ってみようかなと思います。この方式みなさまからの、ご感想などいただけましたら幸いです！

So as an experiment, I will try to record several episodes in Japanese first.

それでは今日のトピックに入っていきたいと思います。
今日は、海外で日本人の方を見かけたら、日本語で話す？それとも英語のまま？　という素朴な疑問です。
 
Okay, so let's get into today's topic. 
I would like to talk about my simple question. The question is whether to talk in Japanese or English when you meet Japanese people in countries other than Japan. 

先日、念願のKomeyuiさんという日本料理のお店に行ってきました。
 
Last week, my husband and I went to the Japanese restaurant Komeyui where I wanted to go for a while. 

少しお高めな値段設定なのですが、
素敵なサービスと、まぁおいしい！ここは日本なの？という新鮮なお魚が食べられるお料理屋さんです。
 
The price range is a bit expensive, however, you can have beautiful dishes there with great customer service. I felt like I came back to Japan as I could have fresh sashimi there.

ブリスベンにいらっしゃる皆さんにもぜひ行ってほしいです。
 
If you are in Brisbane, you shouldn't miss it. 

異国の地にいると、日本食が恋しくなるものですが、日本食レストランといっても「こんなの日本にないよ！」というメニューを提供しているお店もあるので、「本当の」日本料理を食べられるというのは贅沢極まりないことなのです。
 
Living in a foreign country makes me miss Japanese food. There are Japanese restaurants, however, I am not sure if it is authentic as I can see the dishes I have never seen in Japan at the restaurants. 
So, it is more than a luxury to have authentic Japanese food in Australia. 

さて、おいしいお料理をいただいたわけなのですが、
そこで、私の小さな悩みに遭遇しました。
　
Anyway, I had lovely dishes there and enjoyed the time. 
I also encountered a small concern I have held for a while. 

お店で、注文取りに来てくださる方（ウェイトレスさん）が
日本人だろうなっていう場合
・日本語で話しかけるべきなのか
・英語のままで話しかけるべきなのか
 At the restaurant, the waitress came to our table and took our orders. 
It seemed like she was Japanese. 
I am wondering if I need
-to talk to her in Japanese 
-to keep talking in English. 
 
お互い日本人だろうなってわかってる時ってどうするのがいいんでしょうか？
 Both of us noticed that we were Japanese and may speak in Japanese with each other. I was not sure what to do in this case. 

これ、実は昔から悩んでいることなんです。
ちなみにインスタグラムのフォロワーさんにもアンケートをとったところ、
日本語で話す方：23％
英語で話す方：23％
様子を見る：54％　でした。
 
I have been wondering about the issue for a while. 
I asked my Instagram followeres regarding what they do when they are in this situation. 
 
23 % of respondents chose to switch to Japanese. The same percentage is for speaking in English. 
Most of the respondents chose 'depending on the situation' at 54%. 

ちなみに私も様子を見るというタイプなんです。
I am also the type of person who waits and sees the situation and decides what to do. 

これにも一応理由があるんですが、
 
もしかしたら英語でサーブする練習したいのかな
この料理を説明するの練習したのかもしれないし、、、
とか色々考えてしまうんです。
 
I have reasons not to switch from English to Japanese immediately. 
I tend to consider like 
"The person might practise English to serve at the restaurant" 
"They may have practised the phrases to explain dishes.." and so on. 

私は、様子を見て、
お相手が日本語にされたら、私も日本語にするっていうスタンスなんですよね。
 
In general, I always wait and see what the person wants. 
I mean if they switch to speaking in Japanese, I will. This is my style. 

みなさんは、私のような立場だったらどうされますか？
もしくは、逆の立場のご経験がある方はどうされるとうれしいのでしょうか？
 
So I am wondering what you would do if you were in my shoes. 
Or if you have an experience from the waitstaffs perspective.

That would be great if you tell me what to do when you meet someone who seems Japanese. Do you speak them in English or switch to Japanese?
