Anticipating the Bloom

As the cherry blossoms' forecast in Tokyo was set for March 27th this year, anticipation grew. The Japan Meteorological Agency has declared the cherry blossom season across the country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. These declarations are based on observations of 58 designated "sample trees," primarily the Somei-Yoshino variety, which has been a symbol of spring since 1966 at Yasukuni Shrine.

今年の東京の桜の開花予想は3月27日に設定され、期待が高まっています。気象庁は、北海道から沖縄まで全国で桜の開花宣言を行っています。これらの宣言は、「標本木」として指定された58本の木、主にソメイヨシノ品種に基づいています。ソメイヨシノは1966年から靖国神社で春の象徴でした。

A Symbol of Spring

The cherry blossom, especially the Somei-Yoshino variety, which makes up about 80% of the cherry trees we enjoy today, is a hybrid that originated in Japan from the crossbreeding of Edo-Higan and Oshima cherry trees during the Edo period. The arrival of their blooms, spurred by the gentle warmth of spring, signals the beginning of the cherry blossom viewing season, a time for joy and renewal.
