This is a very special recording of the Italian Concerto. The first movement is less idiosyncratic than what Gould can tend to. It is straight up the line, and benefits from it. Unbelievably clear and musical. The precision of the timing. I can't think of its equal. The second movement is fine, although perhaps lacking a little in pathos. The third movement is too fast for my liking. But you have to listen to this recording for the first movement. To my knowledge Gould only made one serious recording of the Italian Concerto. Perhaps he thought he could not better this one.
