アイスランドは、日本の北海道よりもやや大きい、北大西洋の島国。

400以上の氷河があるが、そのひとつ、 "ok" と愛称された氷河は氷を失い、すでに瓦礫の溝となっている。

2019年8月、"ok" の消失を公的に認定する行事が予定されており、これを記念する銘板 plaque が公開された。

銘板には、アイスランド語の銘文の下に、次の英訳が添えられている。

“ A letter to the future 

Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. 

In the next 200 years, all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. 

This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. 

Only you know if we did it.”

アイスランドの有名な詩人が書いたというだけあって、平明ななかにも深みがある。

「この銘板を読んでいるあなただけ only you が、なすべきこと what needs to be done を我々がしたかどうか if  we did it を知っている」

最後の行が、祈りとともに人類の未来を予告しているようだ。
