Given the stock market's stomach churning drops in early 2020, the allure of a quite, safe, FDIC insured savings account is understandable. But how bad is it to avoid investing your savings altogether? The short answer, it's not great, because leaving long-term money in cash or savings is likely to leave a lot of potential gains on the table. Gains you're likely to need later in life. Investing requires you to take some risk. You could lose money, especially if you invest in stocks, but the reward for taking that risk could be a much higher return on your investment. $100 invested in cash at the start of 1928 would have increased to about $2,000 by the end of 2019. The same amount invested in the stock market would have grown to more than $500,000. You're likely to need some of stock's growth for retirement and other long-term goals. The reason? Inflation. Inflation is the rise in the cost of things over time. It has averaged about 3% per year historically. At that rate, in 20 years you can expect to need more than $1,800 to cover every $1,000 you spend today. Here's the problem. The interest rate on cash accounts may lag inflation. That means you'd have to save a massive amount to put away enough for a retirement that could last 30 years or more. Investing on stocks can help you accumulate the savings you'll need. Keep in mind that you don't have to invest all your money. In fact, you probably shouldn't. And you don't even need to invest all your money in stocks. Bonds offer better returns than a savings account and are less risky than stocks. But your long-term savings will likely generate far better gains if you invest them somewhere other than your bank account.
