アメリカ西海岸の高校に通うジョンは、学校では常にオタクと見なされていた。 彼は恥ずかしがり屋で内向的で、体力に欠けていた。 彼の趣味は、漫画を読むこと、アニメを見ること、ビデオ ゲームをすること、勉強することだった。彼は特に日本の漫画やアニメが好きだったが、彼の理解者は少なく、クラスで人気がなく、友達もほとんどいなかった。

顔をあげてみると、サラという美少女がかわりにとってくれた。

ジョンは、サラにすぐに惚れてしまった。

サラは社交的で、みんなの人気者だった。朝も昼も夜も、ジョンはサラのことを考えていた。

「ああ、サラと恋人になれたら・・・いいのになあ」

サラからは、数学の勉強を教えてほしいと頼まれて、教えていた。

「ありがとう！こうやって解くのね！ジョンはすごく賢いのね。どこの大学を目指しているの？」

「僕は、マサチューセッツ工科大学を目指しているよ！」

「え、あのMIT、すごいじゃない」

ある日、彼は勇気を振り絞ってサラにガールフレンドになってほしいと頼んだが、彼女に断られた。

「私、勉強ができる人はすごいと思うわ。でも、やっぱり、勉強とスポーツを両立している人が私の理想なの。ごめんなさい」

ジョンは心を痛めた。心にぽっかりと穴が開いた気持ちになった。

「ああ、ぼくは、やっぱり、サラにふさわしい男じゃないんだ・・・彼女は、野球やアメリカンフットボールと勉強を両立している男が好きなんだ・・・」

何日も悩みに悩みぬいた末、ジョンはある決心をした。

「よし、僕だって、筋トレをして、筋肉ムキムキになってやる。スポーツにも挑戦するぞ！」

ジョンは毎日運動を始め、ウェイトを持ち上げたり有酸素運動をした。 彼は食生活を変え、ジャンクフードを減らし、より多くのタンパク質を摂取した。彼は学校のサッカーチームに参加し、毎日一緒に練習を始めた。 最初は、他のメンバーから笑われていた。しかし、毎日熱心に練習する姿勢に心をうたれた他のメンバーも、次第にジョンを認めるようになった。

「そうね・・・ジョン、あなたがMITに合格したら付き合いましょう。私も行きたい大学があるの。二人で、まずは一緒に勉強しましょう。夢に向かって、二人で努力するの。そのあと、交際しましょう」

二人は猛勉強に励んだ。しかし、スポーツにのめりこんでしまったジョンは、成績がふるわなかった。

「まずい・・・このままではMITに落ちるかもしれない・・・」

試験本番で、ジョンは結果を残せなかった。MITには不合格となり、滑り止めの私立大学に入学を決めた。

「ごめん、サラ。僕、MITには不合格だった。約束を果たせなかったね」

「ううん、あなたが、スポーツも勉強も、一生懸命頑張っていたの、私は知っているわ。MITは残念だったけど、私、あなたのことが好きよ。私たち、付き合いましょう」

ジョンは、天にも昇るほどに幸せだった・・・その後、二人は結婚した。

どの夫婦よりも、幸せな家庭を築くのだった。

Sarah likes John's change and even goes to see him at soccer games.

The two were talking on the way home after the soccer match.

"Today's match, John, you were very cool. You played well."

John thought, "Now is the time."

"Thank you. Sarah, I want you to go out with me."

"Well... John, if you pass MIT, we'll go out together. There's a university I want to go to, too. Let's study together first. We'll work hard together toward our dreams. Let's meet later."
