青とゴールドが印象的な熱気球を作って空に飛ばしたのは、フランス人のMontgolfier兄弟のお話。空に憧れ、情熱を持って実験、失敗、分析、観察、そしてまた実験を繰り返す主人公たちの空のストーリーは、とても読んでいて楽しかったです。ベルサイユで行われた初めての長距離移動の気球のバスケットに乗っていたのは、人間ではなくて、本の表紙に描かれている動物たち（ニワトリ、羊、アヒル）だったという事実に驚きました。

主人公は孤児の女の子・Magpieは、生きるためにスリをする日々。ある日、Montgolfierの家の箱を盗んで欲しいと依頼を受けたが、気球の実験に巻き込まれ、度胸と知識が認められ、Montgolfier一家と暮らし始めました。たくさんの大切なメッセージが込められている一冊でしたが、最後は当時の男女平等問題についても触れられていました。Montgolfier家には16人の子供がいたけど、兄弟たちは父親から期待をされていたけど、姉妹は教育も受けられていなかったようです。物語の最後、Magpieと新しく生まれた女の子が空飛ぶ乗り物の未来を背負っているという期待に満ち溢れたエンディングも好きでした。

Magpie a pickpocketing girl with no parents but Coco-her pet rooster ended up stealing a box in Montgolfier’s house, joining a flying experiment and living with his son, Pierre and the Montgolfier. This book is full of many twists, endless problems and great messages to the readers, especially girls ‘everybody (boys and girls) has an opportunity equally’ because this flying adventure story turned into a story about talented, determined Montgolfier’s sister, who were forced to not have education and not treated equally by their dad because it was a girl. However, the ending of the story implies that the new Montgolfier daughter and Magpie will develop a new flying machines and fly together higher in the sky!
