Talking of bridges, I was reminded that a new bridge was opened in my town last year. It is the first time in a few decades that a new bridge has been opened. It connects my town and a neighbouring town across the Edo River. It was built to ease the traffic jams on an old bridge about 2.5km away. The old bridge had been always busy and crowded during the day, whether it was weekdays or weekends. On weekdays, it was crowded with so many lorries going back and forth across the bridge. Most of them used it to go up and down warehouses in my town. On weekends, it was crowded with cars driving back and forth between their homes and a big shopping centre in my town. I could easily see from my flat that the bridge was crowded.
So I expected the new bridge to be of great help to ease the crowdedness on the old bridge, but it was not. It is of no help to ease it and the old bridge remains overcrowded. This is because the new bridge is a toll bridge. No one knew that it would be a toll bridge just before it was opened. I knew it just after it was opened and thought that no one would use it as long as it required toll fares.
It is a great pity that the bridge administrator did not learn from the failure of another toll bridge near the bridge, which connects my town and another neighbouring town. When it was opened, it charged tolls and it would be going to stop charging them in the future if certain conditions were met. In the end, it needed about thirty years to stop collecting the tolls. Almost no one had used the bridge during the thirty years. I had crossed the bridge several times and had little seen other cars on the bridge. It is a waste of time and money to discourage drivers from using the bridge.
The administrator of the new bridge should learn from this failure and had better stop charging tolls. Otherwise, it is a white elephant.

橋といえば、昨年、ボクの町に新しい橋が開通したことを思い出しました。 新しい橋が開通するのは数十年ぶりです。 ボクの町と隣町を江戸川を挟んで結んでいます。 わずか約 2.5 km 離れたところにある古い橋の交通渋滞を緩和するために建設されました。 旧橋は平日・休日を問わず日中はいつも混んでいました。 平日は橋を行き交うトラックで混雑していました。 そのほとんどが、ボクの町にある倉庫を行ったり来たりするため利用していました。 週末は、ボクの町にある大きなショッピングセンターに行き来する車で混雑していました。 ボクのマンションから、橋が混雑してるのをよく見かけました。
そのため、新しい橋が古い橋の混雑を緩和するのに大いに役立つと期待していました。でも、そうではありませんでした。混雑緩和には役に立たず、古い橋は依然として混雑したままです。理由は、新しい橋が有料だからです。 開通直前までこの橋が有料とは誰も知りませんでした。 ボクは、開通直後に知り、有料なら誰も利用しないだろうと思いました。
橋の管理者が、ボクの町と別の隣町を結ぶ近くの別の有料橋の失敗から学ばなかったのは非常に残念です。 この橋は、開通当初は有料で、一定の条件が満たされれば将来、無料化する予定でした。 結局、無料化に30年もかかりました。この 30 年間、この橋を使用した人はほとんどいませんでした。 私は橋を何度か渡ったことがありますが、橋の上で他の車をほとんど見かけませんでした。 ドライバーに橋の使用を思いとどまらせるのは時間とお金の無駄です。
新しい橋の管理者はこの失敗から学び、有料制をやめたほうがいいです。 そうじゃないと、橋は宝の持ち腐れです。
