When I saw the dark lights, I recalled my houses in the Netherlands and Great Britain were dark. The Dutch house has no fluorescent tubes and only light bulbs. When I began to live in it, I felt it dark extremely. It was incomparably darker than in Japan. It was so dark that I was afraid of losing my good eyesight.
Further, the bulbs had burned out very often. Thus, I needed to keep them in stock. In the beginning, my wife and I had been very disgruntled about the darkness. But as we continued to live in the house, we got used to it. We ceased to complain about it. On the other hand, offices and supermarkets in the Netherlands had fluorescent tubes and had the same brightness as those in Japan.
My house in the UK was dark, too. But as we had gotten used to it in the Netherlands, I did not feel it as dark as we felt in the Netherlands. What surprised me the most was that the floor lamp in the living room of our house was extremely bright.　

　照明と言えば、欧州の家は暗いです。オランダと英国に住んでいましたが、どちらも暗かったです。オランダの家には、蛍光灯がありませんでした。電球しかなかったので、住み始めたころはめちゃくちゃ暗く感じました。暗すぎて、目が悪くなるのではと心配したくらいです。
　また、電球がしょっちゅう切れました。そのため、電球を大量に在庫していました。最初のころは、妻と二人でこの暗さに文句たらたら言っていましたが、時間が経つとこの暗さにも慣れたようで、文句を言わなくなりました。その一方で、オフィスやスーパーマーケットなどは、蛍光灯が使われており、明るさも日本と同じレベルです。
　英国でも家の暗さは余り変わりませんでした。でも、オランダで暗さに慣れていたため、違和感は少なかったです。英国の家での一番の驚きは、リビングルームにあったフロアーランプの明るさです。
