It is about the best three books I have ever read. It is not about the favourite books that I have always kept at hand and read over and over again. I am not in the habit of reading the same book over and over again. I rather hate that. Instead, I would like to read more new books.
One of the best three books is “Kukai no Fukei” by Ryotaro Shiba. I was impressed by the author's great writing skills. He describes Kukai, a Buddhist monk, in vivid detail, including the backgrounds. The backgrounds helped me to understand the life of the monk well. Since I read the book, I became a fan of the author and read a lot of his books.
Another book is “Roma-jin no Monogatari” by Nanami Shiono. It is a long novel about Roman emperors. It helped me understand the history of the Roman Empire and what each emperor did. I also liked her other books and read a lot of her books because her writing style is close to Shiba-san's.
The other book is “Fudo” by Tetsuro Watsuji. It argues the relationship between climate and other environmental factors and the nature of human cultures. I read it when I was a university student and was impressed by the book. It gave me hints to understand the features of each region in the world. It was a bible for me to study geography. Since then, I have been looking for a similar book and have met the one, ‘Reflections on the Philosophy of the History of Mankind’ by Johann Herder, for the first time in forty years. I have been enjoying the book, which sometimes reminds me of Watsuji-sam’s book " Fudo ".

今まで読んだ本のベスト３について書いています。いつも手元に置いて何度も読んでいるお気に入りの本についてではありません。ボクには、同じ本を何度も読み返す習慣がありません。むしろ、嫌いです。代わりに、新しい本をもっと読みたいと思っています。
ベスト3の１つは司馬遼太郎の『空海の風景』です。著者の素晴らしい文章力に感銘を受けました。空海という僧侶の生涯が、背景を含めて生き生きと描かれています。背景があることで、僧侶の生き方をよく理解できました。この本を読んで以来、司馬さんのファンになり、彼の本をたくさん読むようになりました。
もう一冊は塩野七生の『ローマ人の物語』です。ローマ皇帝に関する長編小説です。この本のおかげで、ローマ帝国の概要と各皇帝の業績を理解することができました。彼女の他の本も大好きです。彼女の文体は、司馬さんに似ていて、彼女の本もたくさん読みました。
もう一冊は和辻哲郎の『風土』です。気候やその他の環境要因と人間の文化の本質との関係を論じています。大学生の時に読んで感銘を受けました。この本から世界各地の特徴を理解するヒントを得ました。この本は、ボクにとって地理を勉強するバイブルでした。それ以来、同じような本を探していて、40年ぶりに出会いました。それがヨハン・ヘルダーの『人類歴史哲学考 』です。この本を読んでいると、和辻哲郎の『風土』を思い出すことがあります。
