When I was surfing the web, I came across an interesting news article. It was about women's going topless in Germany. Until just recently, women had to wear swimwear in public places such as swimming pools. But now, they no longer have to. The rule was changed thanks to a complaint from a German woman. When she was about to swim in a public swimming pool, she was asked by a lifeguard to wear swimwear to swim in the pool. She filed a complaint against the rule to a German public authority. Then it was immediately overturned. And now, women can swim topless in public pools. The story surprised me a bit because I had taken it for granted that German women were already able to go topless near water at any time. But that was my misunderstanding and came from what I had seen in the Netherlands, a neighbouring country. About twenty five years ago, when I lived in the country, I often saw Dutch women going topless near water. When I had been to a pond in a forest park near Amsterdam, I saw a lot of Dutch women going topless there. I also heard that a lot of Dutch women went topless on the beach. So it was very common, nothing special, for Dutch women to go topless near water. As I got used to it in the Netherlands, I took it for granted that it must be common in neighbouring Germany. But I knew from the news that I was wrong. And I also found again that the Netherlands and Germany have been still totally different in culture, customs and practices.

　ネットサーフィンをしていて、面白い記事を見つけました。ドイツの女性のトップレスに関する記事です。ドイツでは、これまで女性がプールなどで泳ぐときは、水着の着用をもとめられていました。ところが、最近、女性も胸を隠さずに泳ぐことができるようになったようです。あるドイツ人女性の不服を述べたおかげでルールが変わったのです。彼女は公共のプールでトップレスで泳ごうとしたところ、監視員に泳ぐなら水着をつけるよう求められたのです。これについて、彼女はドイツの公的機関に不服を申し立てました。その結果、ルールが覆され、いまでは、ドイツの女性は公共プールでトップレスで泳げるようになったそうです。
　この記事を読んだ時、ボクは少し驚きました。ボクは、ドイツではトップレスはとっくに認められると思いこんでいたのです。でも、それは誤解でした。オランダでの経験かそう思い込んでしまったのです。オランダに住んでいた約25年前に、オランダの女性が水辺でトップレスになっているのをよく見ました。アムステルダム近くの森林公園にある池にいくと、たくせんの女性がトップレスになっていました。また、海岸でもたくさんの女性がトップレスになっているいう話を聞いたこともあります。その当時から、オランダでは女性がトップレスになるのは当たり前で特別なことではありませんでした。ボクはこれに慣れていたので、隣国のドイツでもトップレスが当たり前と思いこんでいました。でも、このニュースでボクが間違っていたことがわかりました。オランダとドイツは、文化、習慣や慣習がいまだに全く違うことを改めて認識しました。
