It is my routine to read other writers' articles on the Note every day. It is great fun to read them. Among them is Akira-san’s article, which attracted me the most in the last week. It was about a type of road intersection, a roundabout. That reminded me that I drove through a lot of roundabouts when I lived in Europe. It was when I lived in the Netherlands that I first experienced one of them. It was a small roundabout. When I reached it, I made a brief stop to see if there were no drivers coming from the right. Generally, at a roundabout, drivers in the roundabout, or coming from the right, have priority. When I was sure that they were not coming, I drove into the roundabout and left it by indicating my direction. Driving it was not as difficult as I had expected. It was relatively small and had only one lane. After that, I went through many roundabouts in the country. Some had two lanes, but they were not difficult to drive. I could drive them just as well as the ones with one lane.

　他のノーターさんの記事を読むのが楽しく、日課になりました。その中で、先週、一番気になったのが山根あきらさん記事です。交差点の一種の「ラウンドアバウト」に関する記事です。この記事を読んで、欧州に住んでいたころに数々のラウンドアバウトを通ったのを思い出しました。ラウンドアバウトに初めて出会ったのは、オランダに住んでいた時です。それは、小さなラウンドアバウトでした。ラウンドアバウトに入る前に一旦停止し、右から来る車はいないか確認しました。通常、ラウンドアバウトでは、ラウンドアバウトの中にいる、つまり右から来る車に優先権があります。車がいないことを確認後、ラウンドアバウトに進入し、ウィンカーを出して出ました。このラウンドアバウトは小さく、車線が一つだけだったので、運転は思ったほど難しくありませんでした。その後も、数々のラウンドアバウトを通過しました。中には、2車線あるラウンドアバウトもありましたが、1車線のラウンドアバウトと同様、難しさはありませんでした。
