Inequality. From gender disparity, racism and discrimination, to economic inequality – everywhere in the world, it is evident that we still need a lot of work in order to achieve equality. All these current problems of the world may seem a bit overwhelming. But how can we contribute to be part of the solution, or should we even contribute at all?

Well, to answer the latter question, here is a quote from Kimberlé Crenshaw, “If you see inequality as a ‘them’ problem or ‘unfortunate other’ problem, that is a problem.” And the key to this whole thing is: ‘Intersectional Feminism.’ Intersectional feminism is defined as “a prism for seeing the way in which various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbate each other.” The term was first coined in 1989 by the very woman I quoted earlier, Kimberlé Crenshaw. She is an American law professor, lawyer, civil rights advocate, and of course, an intersectional feminist.

‘Intersectionality’ describes how people’s social identities can overlap. Here’s an example. Maria is a queer, immigrant woman. But she isn’t just facing gender or sexuality-based inequalities. She might also be facing economic inequalities, putting her in the lower half of the social pyramid. As you can see, this creates compounding experiences of discrimination for her. Here’s where intersectional feminism comes in. It centers on the voices of people like Maria in order to comprehend the depths of the overlapping, concurrent inequalities that they are facing, and the relationships among them.

Intersectional feminism also urges us to recognize the historical settings around an issue. Long histories of violence and systemic discrimination have bred fundamental inequalities that put many at a disadvantage from the start. Systemic forms of discrimination that have been engrained in the system will continue to take a toll on generations if we don’t do anything to change things around. Poverty, caste systems, racism, and sexism are all examples of this systemic discrimination.

Aside from the historical context, it’s also worth noting that those who are most impacted by gender inequalities and gender-based violence, are also the ones who are the most impoverished and marginalized – women in rural areas, indigenous, brown, and black women, are just to name a few examples. And let’s not forget how these marginalized groups are also the ones who are most impacted by the effects of climate change and natural disasters. The hardships they have to face just keep adding up.

So you see, the problems of the world are somehow all intertwined. At a glance, gender inequality may seem like a totally separate issue from, say, racism or climate change. But they’re all actually related to each other. And there are people who are bearing their harsh, overlapping impacts. Through an intersectional feminist lens, we are fighting for equal rights for everyone, while putting the most oppressed first. We are raising the connections and we are fighting all the fights for justice and liberation. We are breaking down the walls of all forms of oppression, simultaneously.

歴史的な背景もさることながら、ジェンダーの不平等やジェンダーに基づく暴力の影響を最も受けるのは、農村部の女性、先住民、褐色人種、黒人の女性など、最も貧しく疎外されている人々であることも注目すべきことです。そして、これらの社会から疎外されたグループが、気候変動や自然災害の影響を最も受けるのも忘れてはならない。彼らが直面する苦難は積み重なるばかりです。

このように、世界の問題は何らかの形で絡み合っているのです。男女間の不平等と人種差別や気候変動は、一見するとまったく別の問題に思えるかもしれません。でも、実はすべて関係し合っているんです。そして、その重なり合う厳しい影響に耐えている人たちがいるのです。交差型フェミニストのレンズを通して、私たちは最も抑圧された人々を第一に考えながら、すべての人の平等な権利のために闘っています。私たちはつながりを高め、正義と解放のために活動しているのです。
