A volcano has erupted about 19 miles (30km) from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, the third time in two years that lava has gushed out in the area.
Thousands of small earthquakes had been recorded in the area in the week leading to the eruption, signalling that the magma below ground was moving and an eruption was imminent.
Iceland has 33 volcanic systems considered active, the highest number in Europe, and has an eruption every five years on average.

A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland.
Lava and smoke emanated from a fissure in the ground on the side of a mountain.
It follows intense earthquake activity in the area which is around 20km from Reykjavik.
Smoke from the volcano could be seen from Iceland’s capital.
Experts said there was no direct imminent hazard to people living in the region.
Two years ago, lava fountains erupted from the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system in the same area.

　アイスランドの首都近郊で火山が噴火しました。周辺では地震活動も活発化しています。
　現地の気象当局によりますと、10日午後、首都レイキャビクから約30キロ離れた火山が噴火しました。
　数百メートルにわたる地表の切れ目から溶岩や白煙が吹き出しています。
　周辺地域では数日間で1500回以上の地震が観測されていました。
　この火山が噴火するのは2年間で3回目です。
　専門家は今のところ「噴火は小規模で火山灰も出ていないことから、航空機の運航などへの影響はない」としています。
